Setting Wired to take priority over Wireless connections?

#1 Post by synapse » Sun Aug 15, 2004 12:44 pm

Hi-

When I am connected to the same network both wirelessly and wired, it always sends data through the slower wireless connection instead of the ethernet one. I have to disable the wireless in order for it to work right. Is there a way around this? I like to use the wired for when I am transfering large amounts of data. Thanks-

Dan

If you are using Access Connections simply open the "Location Switching" item on the menus. Select the "Ethernet" tab and click "Switch Ethernet Profiles Autromatically". The Ethernet will take priority over the Wireless automatically. I use this with my Port Replicator at my office all the time.

Sure, just hit F5 and turn off WiFi!

What, hitting one key is too much work? :-)

Sorry, couldn't resist. Seems like a SIMPLE and logical solution if you don't want to/can't use the Access Connections method.

Nah, I think I might be able to do that :P Just trying to figure out if there was an automated way. I probably spent the equivilent though of about 3 months of turning it off just trying to see if there was a different way. ;) Thanks for your help-

Yes there is - and it's what was originally suggested - Access Connections  If you deleted it, you may want to reinstall that part to get the "automated" functionality back.

Windows XP handles this fine, no need for IBM Access Connections.

Simple, place a higher metric number on the wireless connection. This will grant traffic priority to the wired connection automatically whenever both connections are turned on and available; yes, one button is too much here when traffic can easily be prioritized. Go to the wireless network's properties dialog, click on TCP/IP then the properties button, then click on the advanced button on bottom of the general tab, uncheck automatic metric, and in the box type 20. Make sure the same number in the ethernet connection properties is set to 10. This gives the wired connection a higher packet priority all the time when both connections are open.
