My T40 (2373) has a POST issue

#1 Post by LaneJA » Wed Aug 09, 2006 1:33 pm

My t40 is acting wierd, I have search all over this forum and yet no answers.

Here is the problem

I have had my motherboard replaced by IBM a few months back, now that my t40 is out of warrenty I was hoping that the laptop would work for a long time.

It seems when ever I shut down (running XP PRO SP2) and turn the system back on, the lights come on and just the Z looking light stays on, nothing shows on the LCD. If I shut it off again and let it sit say 5-10 min and turn it back on, the system would POST and work normally again. I did the PC Doctor that came preinstalled and everything passes.

I talked to IBM and I got 3 different answers, a "Power Management" problem, I uninstalled and reinstall the power management software, upgraded the BIOS and all the IBM software and no change.

Another rep told me to remove my HD and RAM, and I did the HD but I have to remove the keyboard to get to my ram, and I didn't feel confedent enough to do that. That didn't work.

The last rep told me my plantar? card was bad.

What can I do?! I don't have a lot of money and I need HELP!

Is my t40 dead or can it be fixed?????

I'm afraid that your system board is probably failing. I had the exact same symptoms as you in my previous ThinkPad (a T40, type 2373-12U), and the system board totally gave out within a few days.

The tech support person was refering to a system board when he mentioned "planar." That's what IBM and Lenovo call them.
