BSOD right after Windows Update on at least 5 of our R51's
BSOD right after Windows Update on at least 5 of our R51's
Problem with our laptop fleet:
We have a plenty R51's, at least 5 of them have experienced the very same blue screen error below:
STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000142 (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down.
Cannot boot to Windows
Cannot boot using the last known good configuration
Cannot boot to safe mode
Problem has been observed to occur after a windows update. If you recall, some windows update would actively inform the user that the updates have been installed and needs to restart the computer for it to take effect. Another method of update is that it suggests the option to Install Updates and shut down. In Whatever method the windows update was set to, in the laptop crashes the same blue screen error appeared for each machine (whether it was after an immediate restart or after booting the machine after some hours it was last turned off)
When trying to boot the machine in Safe mode, the usual sequence of windows loading each driver happens, but right after loading all the windows drivers when the machine is about to display the login prompt, the blue screen error appears.
The same scenario happens when you select boot from last known good configuration.. In the sequence where the login prompt is to appear, the blue screen error kicks in.
The users booted from the IBM preloaded partition to perform a revert to factory settings isntallation - thus deleting their files etc..
The issue id like help with is about the blue screen error code and what could have been causing it. Its probably a windows update+ibm driver/device conflict (since the same error appears even when booting to safe mode).
Id greatly appreciate your help on this, feel free to ask any question and id be glad to explain more details.
Thank you in advance for your help!

I don't personally know anything about this, but a google search turned up the following:

tried that link too.. couldnt perform any of MS's suggestions since they required that the laptop be bootable
the resolution so far is to restore and delete the laptop's contents to the factory settings - this is of course not a real solution.
i wonder what could be happening with Windows update and how it causes the bsod.. the winupdate is an automatic one, its supposed to update only the essential security patches of MS WinXP..
is there a known conflict with IBM drivers and WinXP updates?

i did notice it mentioned a lot about the computer being bootable, but figured something was better than nothing. i don't know what's allowed at your workplace, but http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/ offers windows updates that don't involve anything that isn't installed on your computer, plus no WGA spyware.
