Can I switch out keyboard to one without the Windows Key?

#1 Post by stlouislouis » Fri Aug 11, 2006 8:43 am

Hi,

I think having larger Cntl and Alt keys are preferable to having a Windows Key. If I buy a Lenovo thinkpad (most likely a T60, maybe an X60 model), can I take out the keyboard it comes with and replace it with one (possibly from a older T4x model) which does NOT have a Windows key?

Anyone know for sure? Would this void the warranty?

Thanks!

It is my understanding and from comparing my different ThinkPads that the keyboards are in fact different. I share your dislike of the windows key, however I must admit that I have adapted to the change quite easily. I am writing this on my new T60 with the new style keyboard and I do not find it a problem.

I'm pretty positive that you can not put an X4x keyboard in an X60 out of the box, however I have been considering options for my on-its-way X60s. I plan on going onto ebay and buying an X41 and X60s keyboard (i will probably fail, so i dont want to wreck my main keyboard). Two possibilites:

1. If the keyboard fits geometrically, it may be possible to rewire the X60 connector onto the X40 keyboard, and just use that. It may require moving the screw mounts as well somehow.

2. It may be possible to remove the ctrl, win, and alt keys from the x60 keyboard and rig the crtl and alt from the x40 to fit their place. Remove the rubber bumper under the windows key so it will not register anything, then find a way to rig the key mounts to work out. I'll definately post if i have any success.

No, you can't do this....leave the keyboard alone....
