trackpoint scroll doesn't always work
trackpoint scroll doesn't always work
i've got a T60 and the middle-click scrolling with the trackpoint doesn't always work. it seems to be very application dependent. it work generally with windows and firefox and office, but does not in itunes and a few other programs. any idea what the issue might be?
thanks!
thanks!

This is true. At least with previous versions of Firefox, horizontal scrolling would not work. Horizontal scrolling works with Opera (browser) version 8.54, but it does not work with Opera version 9.tpribors wrote:It does seem to be application dependent. Glad to hear it. I am still using 8.54. I have been waiting until I heard that Opera got this fixed before upgrading to version 9.xx.ramian wrote:Horizontal/vertical scrolling works with no problems in Opera 9. I'm using 9.01 Build 8552.
I was using Opera beta 9 in May, just before 9.00 final was released, and horizontal scrolling did not work on several (beta 9) builds that came out around that time. Other users were reporting the same problem then on both this forum and on Opera's forum.

I am using the same build and horizontal scrolling doesn't work but vertical scrolling does. What scroll style did you set your Trackpoint middle scroll button to in the UltraNav Wizard?

Ah yes, that works. It appears to emulate, or make Windows think it is, a mouse with a center button or clickable wheel. You get a smoothed 2D scroller cursor. I think, though, this has always worked for both Firefox and Opera. It does, however, treat the Trackpad differently than the scroll event from the MMB of the Trackpoint button set. I will try some of the Opera betas as well.

It does, kinda; the Trackpad is a Synaptics hardware device and has Synaptic drivers that come embedded within UltraNav. It doesn't quite have the config setup for the MMB scroll button that the Trackpoint does. Rather, it just allows you to set "scroll zones" on the side and various other hotspots. It also has a slightly different hardware interface than does the Trackpoint from the keyboard. This results in a certain embedded scroll funtionality with the Trackpad that is somewhat different from that of the Trackpoint. One difference is that, when scrolling with the Trackpad, no scroll-cursor is displayed instead of the arrow cursor as would be with the Trackpoint.
There is a also a difference between the scroll modes for deafult/auto-select and smooth scrolling. With smooth scrolling, you can't really switch focus to embedded frames on webpages in a browser (i.e. the post reply text field with the scroll bar on the edge) as opposed to the browser's own page scroll bar.

Scrolling indeed doesn't work everywhere (example not in winamp or live messenger).
I actually have a question related to this. I really like the ability to scroll using middle click, but when using firefox with a normal mouse, I'm used to middle click to open a new tab. Is it possible to set somehow that possibility? (for example left+right mouse = middle mouse)

Re: trackpoint scroll doesn't always work
I had similar problem with scrolling on my ThinkPad in Firefox.
I was able to scroll in most applications I was using but not in FF.
Finally I found out the solution (also described on my blog: http://marekhamerlik.wordpress.com/2011 ... n-firefox/ ):
1. restore old drivers
2. set scroll to standard (control panel>mouse>track point: choose scrolling for middle button setting and additionally in settings… choose standard scroll type) – so now everything works as before
3. edit tp4table.dat in your system (should be in c:\windows\system32\) by adding line:
*,*,firefox.exe,*,*,*,WheelStd,1,9
before/above the line:
[AutoScrollTable]
- now scrolling (including vertical) should work in Firefox
This probably can be used in similar way for other apps you have problem with.

Re: trackpoint scroll doesn't always work
I'm having the same problem with Firefox 21.
Could you explain how to do this, that is, how to restore the "old drivers"?
Also, tp4table.dat cannot be found on my system.
I'm running Windows XP on a T60p.

Re: trackpoint scroll doesn't always work
Alright,
So it wasn't in my WINDOWS or system32 folders, but I did find TP4TABLE.DAT in <C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP>, as well as <C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\Media>. I added the line "*,*,firefox.exe,*,*,*,WheelStd,1,9" to both of these files, as well as to TP4SCROLL.DAT, and scrolling still does not work in any way. (for trackpad or trackpoint)
Is there some driver I should be updating or rolling back?
Thanks,
Thomas
