Windows 98 SE: still safe to use?

#1 Post by pianowizard » Sat Aug 12, 2006 1:49 pm

Microsoft stopped providing new security updates for Windows 98 Second Edition on July 11, 2006. Unfortunately, I still have three computers that must run Windows 98. Would it be safe to access the internet on those machines? I have installed the AVG Free Edition virus scanner on all three computers; should I add firewalls too?

Sitting behind a firewall might be good safety measure though I'm still yet to have any issues with 98SE and I still work with vintage computers that run the OS on a daily basis.

IMHO it's not safe to run any computer without a firewall these days. Not just win98... but especially true for win98.

...

you mean to say there are people who don't use firewalls?!

Even Linux has firewalls available for it, and it's supposedly the most secure OS ever. :P

It's probably OK, assuming there no "super" worm written that will remotely destroy a Win98 machine. Someone may get bored enough and write one someday to "stick it to the poor, unfortunate souls" limited by hardware or funds to run W98. But until that day, it's probably OK.

She does the things you do.
