FTP server, Windows Firewall set up.. HELP!!!

I am trying to set up a FTP server using WarFTPD on Windows XP SP2.

It works fine if the Windows Firewall is turned off.

When Windoes firewall is on, I cannot connect to the server.

So I opened ports 21 and 20. Then it connects, but the client cannot access the directory.

Does anyone the solution for this?

One possibility is that the machines are probably not DNS servers, so put the address of the FTP machine in the Hosts file of the client machine. That might work. ... JD Hurst

Port 21 and 20 is only used when you use ftp active mode. When using passive mode port 21 and a dynamic port is used. If you try to change the connection settings in your ftp client to use active mode for that connection i guess it should work.
WarFTPD i believe also have the option to select a range of ports to use when using passive mode. If you limit that range you could add that range to the exception list of your firewall.

Another option is that you could try to add the .exe file for the ftp server insted of port 21 and 20 to the exception list in the firewall configuration. That should allow the dynamic ports as well when using passive mode.

Limit the range of ports used when using passive mode and add that range to the excetption list of your firewall or add the .exe file to your exception list should solve your problem with passive mode. Passive mode is a bit dependent of the ftp server setup so if passive mode still not work after doing what described above it have to do with the settings of the ftp server.

Great suggetion Wiz. You seem very knowledgeable about this things. I was planning to set up a FTP server then I got kind of concerned about security.

I found that OpenSSH will be a better solution and use Filezilla as the client.

If I have any more problems I will post a HELP topic regarding this.
