T40 Audio Not Working

Several days ago the audio output on my T40 stopped working. I've tried various things to no avail. Today I located a suitable headset in the junkdrawer and when I pluged it in to the headset jack on the side there is audio there. Clearly the driver software configuration is not at fault.

Before I open it up or send it off to EasyServ (ugh) I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone knew about the speaker output on the T40 and whether it was likely this was a simple user-correctable problem or was likely to require some IBM service action.

Solved!

This machine had recently been returned from EasyServ for a problem requiring replacement of the System Board. When they reassembled it they trapped one of the speakeer wires under the metal cover of the Ultrabay and crushed it torquing down the screws. Over several weeks of normal usage apparently the insulation wore through and the wire shorted to the housing, killing the speakers. Fortunately the wire was not broken and removing it from under the Ultrabay was enough to allow the audio to work.

More quality control from Solectron :-)
