Win XP Pro hangs shuttin down after Access Connect update?

#1 Post by gv » Fri May 14, 2004 6:12 pm

Yesterday and today again Windows hangs when during shut down and won't go down unless I turn off the power. When it hangs explorer has been closed already. ctrl-alt-del to get the tasklist does not work. This has happened on two Thinkpads: a T30 and a T40 so it does not seem to be related to a particular machine. It does not happens every time but it right now it seems only to happen after some time. (So booting and shutting down again does not have the effect.)

I think this could be related to the Access Connection update to version 3.20 as I updated it on both TPs yesterday morning. But at this stage I am not sure about that. As both TPs basically have the same software configuration it could be something else, too, that was just updated with an automatic update... If anyone experiences the same problems please let me know.

I have exactly the same problem. I also updated the access connections 3.2, after updating the wireless a/b/g driver. I'm considering restoring back to post a/b/g update, and see if it resolves the problem.

I have a T41 with the Intel 2100 Wireless card. There were very recent updates today for BIOS, Embedded Controller, Wireless Card Drivers, Access Connections (3.20) and Software Installer.

I downloaded everything, read through the instructions and did the following:

1. Embedded controller first (because BIOS was already at V3)
2. BIOS
3. Uninstall Access Connections 3.1 (because wireless driver instructions say to do that).
4. Update Wireless Driver Update.
5. Install Access Connections 3.2

So far, no problems. I don't have wireless where I am, so I still have that do test. I'll keep my eye on things and keep testing. If I have any issues, I'll post back here. ... jdhurst

I only have the abg in my T40. My T30 though with an older combo card shows exactly the same problem. So reading your post makes it look like it is a problem of Access Conncetions regardless of the wireless card...

The abg driver does not depend on 3.20 so you might as well just try to install the previous version of access connection. I will for a start close the QCTRAY before my next shutdown to see if this has any effects...

BTW, is there a bug reporting address for the software??

Same problem here. After I updated the Access Connection, it won't shut down properly.

I just reinstall the previous version. Probably IBM will release the updated version sometime next week.

Yes :( I spoke to soon. I had deactivated (but not uninstall Access Connections) and it was ok. I activated it and sure enough, hangs on shutdown. Actually, the shutdown sequence doesn't even start (or only goes a little way). My shutdown scripts did not run, the logoff sound did not run, and it appears to be interfering with the network connections.

I just checked IBM website, but couldn’t find earlier versions. But your IBMTOOLS folder has version 2.61. Use ThinkPad Software Installer to remove the new, and reinstall the old version.

I went back to Access Connections 3.10 and it works fine. I submitted the bug to IBM Support through the web site, and this is what I got today:
==============
Dear Valued IBM Customer

This is definitely pointing to a problem with Access Connections 3.20, but we no known issues with it so far. I advise you open a case with your national IBM PC HelpCenter at 1-800-565-3344 or 416 383-3344 in Toronto
==============

No IBM forums anymore, so no known issues anymore :(

I called the IBM Help Center and opened a case with them. We'll see what happens. .... jdhurst

I couldn't find it manually either, but I used the Software Installer. It found the old version, and installed it (after I removed version 3.20).

I'm glad this thread exists! I have the same problem on the occasional restart or shutdown, and without this thread I'd have wasted time figuring out what the problem was.

The wierd thing is that I have 3.2 installed but don't use it. I've even disabled it in the Run registry and Windows services, but sometimes Windows would still hang during shutdown, but not all the time. I couldn't figure out the pattern, so I just uninstalled Access Connections completely and it's been fine since.

After I installed Access Connection 3.2, I too have been having sporadic problems with restarting my computer. I have tried everything but to no avail.

Fixed my shutdown problem

Turns out it was the Advanced Networking Pack. I removed it and started shutting down properly.

Same problems here with access connections after installing on my A31P and T30. Both hang on shutdown.

uninstalling the 2100 3b driver fixed this problem for me

#16 Post by t41user » Fri May 21, 2004 1:36 pm

I had the same problem: system has been freezing when I attempt to shutdown since I updated the 2100 3b driver, access connections, thinkpad installer, and some other things. My first call to IBM provided no help. My second call, however, came in just after someone else had presented with the same problem but with updating the 2100 3b driver and not access connections. (Notice that the instructions tell you to update your wireless driver before updating access connections.) Anyway, using device manager in my computer, I uninstalled the 2100 3b driver. The system automatically installed it the next time it started up. However, the freeze/hang up problem has disappeared. The problem appears in at least two cases to be the 2100 3b driver (or perhaps the thinkpad installer program) and not access connections.

That seems to be another/additional problem. My T30 with Combo card and my T40 with abg mini-pci card have definitively the problem with access connections. I went back to 3.10 and now both shutdown fine.

(to be exact: it is not a shutdown problem but a logout problem: the explorer closes and any crtl-alt-del or crtl-shift-esc does not work anymore while still showing the wall paper, i.e. before the messages "logging out user" or "saving settings")

thank you for the correction

#18 Post by t41user » Fri May 21, 2004 1:52 pm

Yes, it's definitely a logout (not a shutdown) problem in my case too. I don't have a backup of an earlier version of access connections, and I can't find one on the ibm website. May I ask if you have any idea how I might find/obtain an earlier version of access connections (earlier than 3.2) in case the problem returns on my computer?

On my hard drive. I always extract the downloaded files into a new directory instead of replacing the last version. So I always have the last three or four versions available for installation which comes handy in situtations like this.

Yes - it is a logout problem, not a shutdown problem. I should have been more clear. Being a logout problem, it also affects suspend. I have the newest 2100 NIC driver, and it is OK with Access Connections uninstalled, or with Version 3.1 installed, but not with Version 3.2 installed. So I don't think it is a NIC driver problem. I have not yet tried to uninstall the Advanced Networking pack (I want to make sure I can re-install it first). .... jdhurst

I reinstalled Access Connection 3.1 over the 3.2 version and things became worse. With the 3.1 version installed, restarting will always (100%) result in hang-ups. This is very frustrating. I had no choice but to reinstall 3.2. Now my system locks up only sporadically (the same problem as when I first installed 3.2 last week). I never had any problems prior to 3.2. What is the solution? I have been waiting for an updated version of accon to come out. Didn't someone comment that a new version was going to be released this week?

I went back to 3.10 and had no problems since. I would though not recommend to install and older version over a new one because most installers compare the installed file version with the one to be installed and will not replace an newer file with an older one. Deinstall Access Connections completely. Make sure that there are no files left behind except for the configuration. (clear out the directory at least, maybe even the registry) Then install 3.10 again.

You may also want to try (if you'd rather stick with 3.20) to shutdown the Access Connection processes QCONSVC, QCTRAY and QCWLICON. QCONSVC via services.msc, QCTRAY via the tray icon and just killing QCWLICON with task manager. After you did that try to log out or shutdown. Maybe it helps (well it should because that is all what Access Connections is using)

logout problem persists for me with access connections 3.2

#23 Post by t41user » Tue May 25, 2004 1:07 pm

Unfortunately, I do not have access to Access Connections 3.1. IBM will not make it available to me. Also, virtually everyone I talk with at IBM denies that there is any problem with Access Connections 3.2. The hang up problem immediately disappears on my T41 when I uninstall Access Connections 3.2, and the problem immediately reappears when I reinstall it. In the future, I'll make more back ups and save copies of earlier versions. For now, does anyone know how I can access Access Connections 3.1 or get 3.2 working on my T41 without hanging up? I have a (perhaps unfounded) aversion to updating my bios. Could the hang up problem involve installing Access Connections 3.2 without installing the latest bios update first? I'm just guessing. Does anyone know why Access Connections 3.2 only causes hang up problems on some machines and not others?

I don't think so. I had the problem on my T30 (there's no BIOS update available) and my T40 (haven't tried the update there yet).

where to find access connections update

#26 Post by t41user » Wed May 26, 2004 3:52 pm

Could you please give me an address on the ibm website where I might find and download an updated version of access connections? The following page does not seem to have it:
http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-46258

I find frustrating the high number of people from ibm who have assured me over the phone that there is nothing wrong with access connections 3.2 and that there must be something else about my machine that has been causing the hang up problem. (Should I expect a phone call or email from any or all of them telling me about an update?)

Clicking on the link on that page to Access Connections brings up a page with the latest 3.21 version.

They just haven't updated the initial page yet as to versions.

From AC 3.21 readme file:
<3.21>
-(Fix) Windows does not logoff when the Access Connections
logon feature is enabled. (version 3.20 only).
