Do "open bay" models include an HDD cover?

#1 Post by ZPrime » Mon Aug 16, 2004 10:42 am

I've been told by someone on another forum that the "open-bay" Thinkpads do not include the plastic piece that the HDD attaches to. This piece then slides into the bay with the drive and is what you screw down to keep the drive in place.

For anyone who has an open-bay Thinkpad, did yours come with the "Drive cover"?

Also, does anyone know if the 14.1" and 15" T42 use the same drive cover? The parts list shows two different options. The piece of plastic for a T42 15" is priced at $68.50, while the one for the 14.1" frame is only $10.50!!

Are you talking about the ultrabay hard drive adapter??

None of the thinkpads, old or new, include this option as far as know. If you're referring to the systems that have two ultrabays, the second one will have a plastic dust cover but that's all it is, a cover to keep the unused bya filled and keep stuff from going inside (as well as providing a bit more stability by filling the gap).

NOT an UltraBay adaptor.
The T-40 bare bones I opened last week did have it in the box.
No battery tho.

My handheld device can not access PM's and I will not respond.

Yeah, i'm not talking about ultrabay. The actual slot that the primary HDD is intended to live in has a plastic cover on the end. The drive screws to this cover, and then the drive + cover slide into the bay where the drive plugs in. The cover sits flush with the side of the notebook, and a single fat screw holds it in on the bottom.

This cover is $68.50 for a 15" T4x, and $10.50 for a 14.1".

I *really* hope scosgt1 is right and I get one in the box, because I don't want to have to drop another ~$70+ (after shipping & tax) for a piece of plastic! I called IBM and asked about AC/battery and they said both are included, so who knows. I've got an extended battery sitting at home already waiting for the laptop though, so a basic battery would just be a nice bonus. :)

Yes, the outer "bezel" comes with open bay models, but not the HD "caddy". IMO, you can live w/o the caddy.

My open bay model (2379EZU) also came with the HD cover but not the caddy. I'm not sure its a good idea to go without the caddy since with the caddy the electronics on the bottom of the drive get covered with the caddy. And they are fairly inexpensive:

I didn't buy one from this person since I had a couple from previous purchases. I have found that sometimes the caddies come without screws and sometimes with screws that stick out too far... so having some fairly flat HD screws can be rather important.

So the caddies are generic across all models? Good to know. I will be moving this thing around a lot so for my own sanity I think I'll buy one just in case, unless of course the one from my A22m will fit?

Yes, I think the one from the A22m will fit. The caddies have been fairly generic since the 600 series I think. The newer T4x series seems to come with a slightly less tall caddy, but the older ones work too.
