x24 system board failure

#1 Post by PHall1007 » Tue Aug 15, 2006 5:00 am

Hi,

My x24 system board died about 6 months ago when my x24 was still in warranty and I sent it off for repair. Now, exactly the same thing has happened again, only now my warranty has expired and they are estimating a charge somewhere between £500 and £600 to replace it, which is double what I paid for the thinkpad in the first place.

Does anyone with or without experience of this think I can get a reduced cost or even free repair on the grounds that it wasn't fixed properly first time round since the same, quite serious problem, has hapened again.

Otherwise, does anyone know anywhere I can get a new system board for less and fit it myself? What FRU number should I look for for a new system board? I've found four possibilities with/without Cript Chip and with/without 1394 but I have no idea what a cript chip or 1394 even are.

Cheers, Phil.

Sorry about your motherboard problems.

If you are out of warranty I don't think you stand a chance of getting it fixed for free from Lenovo, unfortunately. Computers do break down (that's why there's warranties).

You have the option of getting another X24 in eBay (around $300.00 these days), and then take your existing X24 apart and sell the parts that are worth selling (LCD and screen assembly, either together or appart, keyboard, palmrest, base assembly, etc). You might get a very cheap repair (or even make money if you are lucky and have patience) with this approach.

By the way, 1394=Firewire. And Cript chip is the encryption chip.

Actually, if you can document that it's the SAME problem (i.e wasn't fixed right in the first place) you'd think it would be covered. What's up with it anyway?
