thinkpad t23 DMA issue

#1 Post by hey00 » Wed Aug 16, 2006 1:19 am

hey everyone..

I just got another T23 today, and I was installing a seagate ST9408114, 40GB 5400RPM 8mb 100ATA AST 12ms seek(slow LOL)

anyways this T23 2647-JU2 with latest bios under windows xp pro sp2, is reporting DMA Mode 2 instead of DMA Mode 5 is strange, and than I try a HITACHI hd it was set mode 4(66MB). I put seagate hd with my desktop using converter bios picked UDMA Mode 5..

so what is the deal here? anyone experience this?

Yes, it is a bug/"Feature" with Windows where, if it detects a certain amount of errors from a drive, it will downgrade the UDMA mode...sometimes all the way down to PIO mode. Both drives should be set at the highest UDMA mode they can handle; the device manager should handle this automatically. :)

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

thank you for your reply.

Well under Device Manager, it says DMA mode 2 I can't change the value.
not only just that, HD Diag tool picks up UDMA mode 2.
is there anyway to overcome this?

I tried searching for answer.. I couldn't find answer to my question.

I dont know the UDMA mode for the T23, but im pretty sure UDMA2 is the highest the T20 can go.

For a desktop, I would go to the device manager and uninstall the primary IDE controller, restart and it usually kicks it back into UDMA5
T20
850mhz, 256mb, T21 hsf, 14.1" (messed up screen), 20gb drive, SMC2532W-B
