Battery care ?

#1 Post by dd » Mon Aug 16, 2004 4:36 pm

Apologies if this has been covered before:

Can somebody confirm if it is best to leave laptop plugged into mains?

Should I let battery rundown 1 time every month?

Any other tips?

Thanks in advance

leave it plugged in whenever you can, don't ever INTENTIONALLY let it run down, but enjoy it and let it run down as often as is convenient in its use as a portable machine......

Opinions will vary on this

for example: http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.c ... %20battery

However I've seen a multiple battery websites that there are a common things they all say about Lithium Ion batteries:

1) Temperature kills! Keep them cool.
2) Intentional deep cycling is BAD.
3) Age of the battery will matter more than use in the long run

One website I've seen said that keeping your laptop in a car in the hot sun even for a few times can damage the battery - so those of you who do customer calls and have your laptop in the car - take it with you to the meeting or leave it at home or at the office.

if you are around power, plug it in, if not use the battery. Best to no fully discharge. You can leave it plugged in forever and it will not harm anything.

Biggest rule is to ENJOY and don't worry about it.

You guys said it's not best to fully discharge, but what is IBM advocating when they discuss deep cycling the new battery several times?

If I'm going to be using the laptop for an extended period of time connected to AC (says days sitting on a desk), I'll even remove the battery.

IBM is wrong (happens sometimes :D )..... taking battery out is a pain, might help a liittle, won't hurt, but not worth the trouble and risk of data loss (if you lose AC) IMHO

IBM does seem to have some correct info too, though. :D

This is from a post of mine about the descrepencies about Li-ion battery care:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... c&start=30

There is at least this one place where ibm got it right. IBM specifically says: Do not deep-discharge Lithium Ion batteries
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.ws ... us&lang=en
ibm wrote:Getting the most out of your battery - ThinkPad General
Note:
Do not deep-discharge Lithium Ion batteries. Batteries can degrade when they are left unused for long periods of time. For some rechargeable batteries (particularly Lithium Ion batteries), leaving a battery unused in a discharged state could increase the risk of a battery short circuit, which could shorten the life of the battery and can also pose a safety hazard. Do not let rechargeable Lithium-Ion batteries completely discharge or store these batteries in a discharged state.
I do like Leon and Greg Gebhardt suggest, though. I don't worry too much about it, I just enjoy my T42 and use the battery as is convient to me. :D
