Memory upgrade creates problems

#1 Post by dako » Wed Aug 16, 2006 9:53 pm

Since buying my T60 (2007-C4U) a couple of months ago I've found this forum to be a great source of information and tips. After reading here about memory upgrades, I recently increased my RAM to 1.5GB by adding 1GB of OCZ PC2-5400 memory (purchased from Fry's) to the open slot. While it seems to be working fine, there is a persistent problem that probably points to some underlying incompatibility. After a couple of hibernation cycles, the system refuses to hibernate any more and displays an error message like "Insufficient system resources available to complete the API." The same thing sometimes happens with standby as well, so the only option left is to shut down.

I never had this problem before installing the OCZ memory, and it probably is impacting other functions as well. Is there something I can do about this, short of installing a second OCZ card? I know that paired memory is optimal, but posts here indicated that adding the single card would still work well, and installing PC2-5400 memory rather than PC2-5300 would be fine. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

The problem you're reporting is a well known problem with WindowsXP and the T60. Microsoft has issued a hotfix that you can download after jumping through some hoops. Search for previous threads on the topic.

You should run a memory test program (e.g. memtestx86) to see if the new DRAM is ok. My suspicion is that it is fine.

Thank you thank you both for the quick replies and solution. The hotfix is installed and all should be well now. I've downloaded memtestx86 and will check the new DRAM.
