running out of Hard Drive Space
running out of Hard Drive Space
Hi,
I've got a t42p with a 60gb hard drive that shows 51 gb total space and roughly 15 gb of free space. my documents and program folders only add up to about 12 gb so something doesn't seem to add up. any suggestions on how i can find out how to make more space or find out where the extra storage is need for?
thanks,
steve

Here is an excellent package. The trial version may show you what you want. http://www.jam-software.com/treesize/
Grab a copy of SpaceMonger v1.4.0 -- it's free.
http://www.sixty-five.cc/sm/v1x.php
It will show you a map of your drive(s), and make it really easy to see which files/directories are taking up all the space.
I've used it for almost 10 years and it's one of the first tools I install on a new machine.

thanks for the tips! i ran spacemonger on my machine and posted the results below. does anything look out of the ordinary to you? what exactly is hiberfil.sys and is it supposed to be that big? pagefil.sys also seems to take up a lot of space.

Nothing looks out of place... you just have a lot of stuff.
You can try lowering the system restore level a little bit (6%-10% seems to work for most).
Could also run CCleaner and clear some of the cr*p out.

You've exceeded your GeoCities bandwidth allotment, so I'll have to guess what you found...stkim wrote:thanks for the tips! i ran spacemonger on my machine and posted the results below. does anything look out of the ordinary to you?
It's the Hibernation file -- always the same size as the amount of RAM you have. It always appears on the C: partition.stkim wrote:what exactly is hiberfil.sys and is it supposed to be that big?
That's your Page (or Swap) file. It can be moved to a different partition if you want. If you have enough RAM, you can even get rid of it altogether. For instance, I have 2GB RAM and run with no swap file whatsoever. Much faster.stkim wrote:pagefil.sys also seems to take up a lot of space.
Does this help?

In addition, it will help speed up your system some if you defragment your hiberfile and page file; this has to be done "off-line" during boot, usually, and with something like PageDefrag from Sysinternals and/or PerfectDisk 7.0 (Which I use and recommend).

Just disable the Predesktop Area and delete all partitions and the install Windows XP, burning the contents of the I386 folder in C root to a C, make it bootable and voilá. all the space ready to use
