X60 / X60s ??
I have been using the x31 for the past 2.5 years.
Recently I started looking at the X60 and I have a few questions, hopefuly someone here can help.
1. What is the difference between the x60 and the x60s? I see that the x60 starts out heavier, but I don't see what's the cause of this?
2. the X60's cpu is faster, but the X60s starts out more expensive for what seems to be the same configuration?
3. my x31 is a 1.4 M chip. How much faster are these Core Duo at 1.6 or 1.8, what can I expect for speed increase if I get an x60?

I do not own either model but I am interested in them too. Here is what I can tell for now.
1, The only difference between X60 and X60S essentially is that X60S is a low voltage version.
2, It seems that X60 is an update to X32 while X60s is update to X40 in terms of form factor. But X60s uses 2.5 Inch HD rather than 1.8 compared to X40.
3, It seems that X60 offers much faster performance if applications are CPU intenstive. For example, if you are compressing files or scanning virus. Or if you are doing a lot of multimedia stuff. For normal use like browsing, typing, office use, I really doubt you may feel any difference.
Overall, it depends on your needs, I think.

currently own X61S, T42, X31, Macbook Pro Unibody i5
the cpu is only a tad faster on the x60 why would that make a noticeable difference?bigtiger wrote:I do not own either model but I am interested in them too. Here is what I can tell for now.

but the battery life on both are the same

1. Not sure about the weight difference, but I know that you can only get WWAN in the X60s. Either way, the difference (if there is any) is so minute that you wouldnt even notice it.
2. The X60s uses the low voltage cpu, basically giving it better real-world battery life. Even though Lenovo claims only about a .2 hr difference, its probably closer to an hour plus under load.
3. My 1.66GHz Core Duo X60s seems to be about the same speed as my 1.86 Pent M T43, although the X60s has another 512mb of memory. You should see an improvment when going to the Core Duo chip. If you use cpu intensive tasks, there probably will be a difference between the X60 and X60s, but if you need a powerhorse, go for the T60/p.
I personally went for the X60s because of the WWAN, improved battery life, and overall better specs on the sale model I bought.

X60s 1704-69U (Core Duo 1.66LV, 1.5GB, 100GB 5400, 12.1" XGA, WWAN, 8 Cell, DVDRW in X6)
External Storage: 250GB + 500GB Porshce
T40 Project: (Planned) P-M 2GHz, 2GB, 100GB, DVDRW

From what you are saying it sounds like I would not see a apreciable speed enhancement over my x31 which is a Pentium M 1.4. Am I right?

Over the 1.4 you should darn well see a noticable difference. My T43 uses the 533MHz FSB Dothan Core at 1.86GHz, which is about the same speed as my X60s because despite its slower clock and lower voltage, it has 2 cores. Your X31 is a 400MHz FSB Baninas Core at 1.4GHz. Whether you go to the X60 or the X60s, you will notice a differencesun365 wrote:From what you are saying it sounds like I would not see a apreciable speed enhancement over my x31 which is a Pentium M 1.4. Also the weight difference may have something to do with the default battery pack. I know they offer a slim battery that may make up for the weight difference. Even still, youre not going to notice a 1/2 pound difference. I wouldnt let that concern you in your buying decision.

What is FSB?

You are correct.sun365 wrote:But Lenovo's website says that the X60 starts out at 3.15
ibbo wrote:Some X60 models do have WWAN. 170695U,1706AFU, 1706ABU, 1706A7U, 170996U, 170997U all have WWAN. The weight difference is small, about 0.15lb. Only the UL x60s is 2.69lb, the other ones are 2.89lb.
UL x60s: 2.69 with slim battery.
Regular x60s: 2.89 with slim battery, 3.00 with enhanced battery, 3.46 with 8cell battery.
x60: 3.15 with enhanced battery, 3.6 with 8 cell battery.
If you're comparing apples to apples, the x60 is 0.15lb heavier than the x60s with enhanced or 8 cell battery. However, the x60s also is able to take a slim battery, which shaves off 0.11lb for a difference of a quarter pound between the lightest regular x60s and the lightest x60.
The slim battery is 2000 mAh while the enhanced battery is 2600 mAh. A 30% increase in capacity.
In any case, an 8 cell x60 will be about the same weight as a x31 while having better battery life.
