Slow System Startup
Slow System Startup
My T42 has a pretty fast Startup, EXCEPT:
after all the non-network startup programs load (in the system tray), everything pauses for about 1 minute. Nothing seems to be happening: The disk light is out, and if I do a CTR-ALT-DEL and look at systems processes, it seems that nothing except taskmgr is running. Finally, after a long minute (or longer) my wireless network connects, and my network programs (aol, weather) start up right away. What is this delay? It DOESN'T happen when I come back from hibernation.

I've been struggling with this problem all day
. I'm on my 3rd clean reinstall(this time, I'm trying my SP1a slipstream disc, and I'll install sp2 over it, instead of using my sp2 disc). I have the exact same problem: ie, the only systray app that loads is my safely remove hardware icon, and after a minute or so access conn loads.
Do you have sp2 installed?

Google for this program: Bootvis
It will reboot your computer when you tell it to, log all the start up procedures, then re-order them to maximize speed.
My laptop is up and running in about 1 minute... The changes I performed were simply shutting down some services and disabling a few startup items (but i left all of IBM's stuff in there). It realy makes a big difference.

28.09 second bootup
Windows XP Pro
IBM T42 2378-EXU
Disabled some services
No boot screen on bootup
Ran Bootvis
This includes starting up access connections with an ethernet connection.
Just type in Windows XP Tweaks into google. You'll find a lot of information. Oh, I should also add that this is a virgin xp sp2 install, not an IBM Restore.
