Slow System Startup

#1 Post by Leon » Tue Aug 17, 2004 3:20 pm

My T42 has a pretty fast Startup, EXCEPT:

after all the non-network startup programs load (in the system tray), everything pauses for about 1 minute. Nothing seems to be happening: The disk light is out, and if I do a CTR-ALT-DEL and look at systems processes, it seems that nothing except taskmgr is running. Finally, after a long minute (or longer) my wireless network connects, and my network programs (aol, weather) start up right away. What is this delay? It DOESN'T happen when I come back from hibernation.

I've been struggling with this problem all day :-(. I'm on my 3rd clean reinstall(this time, I'm trying my SP1a slipstream disc, and I'll install sp2 over it, instead of using my sp2 disc). I have the exact same problem: ie, the only systray app that loads is my safely remove hardware icon, and after a minute or so access conn loads.

Do you have sp2 installed?

no.NEVER installed SP2, so it's unrelated; however I bet that one of the great experts we have out there will give us a successful suggestion by tonight!

ok, reverting to sp1a has solved my problem. I'm about to reinstall sp2 over it, like it used to be before it all died.

well, as I said, I NEVER had SP2, but I DO have the problem. But maybe we're describing different problems? In my case, ALL my startup applications load pretty quickly, and then there is a 1 min.+ wait for Access Connections to load and connect.... anyone?

do you have wireless zero config disabled? If so, try enabling it.

Do you have a network printer or a mapped network share that is not always available? XP is good at mapping things automatically.
Sometimes windows networking hangs for a while when it can't find networked resources it wants.

hey guy, thanks! re-enabling zero wireless config did the trick! I had disabled it on purpose, cause many had suggested this made for more stable wireless connections with Access Connections..... well, I'm not sure if that's the case or not, but it sure made boot up slow....

no problem, it tooks me a lot of playing to figure out that WZC being disabled was the problem. Like you, I just always disabled it at the suggestion of everyone. Ah well.

Google for this program: Bootvis

It will reboot your computer when you tell it to, log all the start up procedures, then re-order them to maximize speed.

My laptop is up and running in about 1 minute... The changes I performed were simply shutting down some services and disabling a few startup items (but i left all of IBM's stuff in there). It realy makes a big difference.

28.09 second bootup
Windows XP Pro
IBM T42 2378-EXU
Disabled some services
No boot screen on bootup
Ran Bootvis

This includes starting up access connections with an ethernet connection.
Just type in Windows XP Tweaks into google. You'll find a lot of information. Oh, I should also add that this is a virgin xp sp2 install, not an IBM Restore.

Well, I just put an extra 512 megs of ram in, bringing me up to 768 megs. After running bootvis, my boot time is now 20.26 seconds, 22 seconds including the wireless coming up. I'm quite a happy camper. :)[/b]
