R32 battery trouble

#1 Post by WS » Thu Aug 24, 2006 7:24 am

Hi guys,

I have now for some time tried to figure out what's wrong with my ThinkPad R32 (TYPE: 2658-MMG). I got this laptop from a friend and at that time it wouldnt even power on and it just gave out a weird sound (not like a bios error sound tho).

So what i did was to disassemble the R32 and try to find out what was wrong. When i removed to the CPU heatsink it magickly just powered up, but since i know that i cant run the laptop without the heatsink i put it back in place in hope it would still run, and it did! So i reassembled the laptop back to normal and today it still works fine but as i was happy about fixing it i didnt care about another problem i discovered. It seamed that the batter to the laptop was not working.

It wasn't dead since i could and still can see the stats for the battery. It currently is charged at 53% but if i unplug the power adapter my laptop just dies. So i found a friend who also had a R32 just to see if i could use his battery in my laptop and vice versa in order to confirm that my battery was dead so i could go out and buy a new one in worst case scenaro.

Altho what i found out was that my battery was working just fine with his laptop and his battery wasn't working with mine either so that lead me to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my R32. And i thought that maybe i manged to screw something up while i was dis/reassembling it. So i decied to open it up and check it out. I found out (as much as i can see) that everyting seems to be in order inside the laptop. I even tested the wires inside the laptop who are connected to the battery just to check and see if the power is running through them and it does. I got about 15,5V both when measuring directly on the battery and also on the wires inside the laptop (while battery was connected). Thease measurements were only done with my battery but i consider it okey since it worked just fine with my friends laptop as a mentioned that before.

So my big question is: Why wont my laptop run with a battery which I know is working.

All help is appreciated since the warranty for the laptop has run out.
Thanks in advance!

I just got an R32 of Ebay, plugged it in, green batt. light came on til I hit power switch. Lights go off, all dead. Take the batt. out, unplug and plug back in. Hit power button w/o battery installed, and it fires right up.

Only prob now is.....won't recognize disc drives. Anybody have a clue what's going on?
If you can't fix it.......get a bigger hammer!
