Please Help Will T41 work with non IBM HD

#1 Post by resahcdog » Fri Aug 25, 2006 12:22 am

I curently have T41 with 60gb 7200rpm & 2gb ram.I am looking to upgrade the HD to the new 160gb 5K160.But do not want to have any compatability problems. I called support 4 times but recieved a different answer each time. I would prefer the 160gb but am concerned about possible cliches with error messages etc.Does anyone have experience or have any expertice on upgrading to larger hardrive and if their are cliches are ther easy fixes available, so far my machine has worked great. I am not a techy and want to avoid any possible problems. Thanks

I cant speak for the T41 per se, but heres my experience on the T43 2669-C8U

I bought a Seagate Momentus 160GB PATA Hard Drive. When I installed it, I got some error message about the hard drive being incompadible at boot. Pressing F2 or something got by it, and it worked fine there after, but every time I booted, I got 3 or 4 annoying beeps and that message. I couldnt find a hack or patch anywhere to get around the whitelist.

I called a rep, and he confirmed that the bios whitelists drives, allowing only Travelstar (IBM & Hitachi branded) drives. I could have left that in there and sucked up the problem, but I just put my 80 back in.

Now, your T41 may be before they began whitelisting. If you cant find anything about running into problems online, then your best bet is to get a drive from someone with a generous return policy, such as newegg, and if it doesnt work, send it back and wait for a 160GB Travelstar.
X60s 1704-69U (Core Duo 1.66LV, 1.5GB, 100GB 5400, 12.1" XGA, WWAN, 8 Cell, DVDRW in X6)
External Storage: 250GB + 500GB Porshce

T40 Project: (Planned) P-M 2GHz, 2GB, 100GB, DVDRW

There is a BIOS drive whitelist for T43s but it covers a wider range of drives than just "IBM & Hitachi branded". For instance, some T43 models ship with Fujitsu drives and they are also definitely on the white list.

Cheers,

Bill

Thanks for the help!

Since this is a hitachi 5k160 does that mean it will work on the T41.What is the whitelist and how would I find out if my machine would work with this drive.
