Loose Lid
Loose Lid
I got my T41 from IBM yesterday. Upon close examination of the laptop, I had the same left palmrest problem; also when the lid is closed, the left-front corner doesn't shut firmly. There is about a 1mm gap. I was quite dissapointed about the build quality, there was quite few creaks/gaps, but there is nothing more annying than a lid that won't close properly. Anyone else here experience the same problem? Is there a way to fix it?

I know what you mean Spectra, I have the same situation, including a weak Left palm rest. I've figured out a way to fix this, just waiting for my Torx tool kit to arrive to remove the palm rest (I have a T40p).
Anyhow, if you can open up the palm rest, insert a business card between the PCMCIA slot and the palm rest to raise it up. (It seems like half of the design flaws can be fixed with a business card
). This will fix your creaky palm rest problem. But the best part is, I think you can "hit two birds with one stone" here. The left palm rest should now be raised up a bit to support the left-front part of the LCD panel when it is closed.
Good luck.

appol0, I opened up the plamrest panel and stuffed a card above the PC card slot, the sqeaking aound under the palmrest is gone, but the lid problem remains.
Then I cut some foam and stuffed it under the left latch opening on the palmrest. Now when I close the lid, the latch lands on the foam instead of hitting the plastic, thus minimizing the problem. Thanks for your help.
