Doubt this is related to the issue, but I did not know of a problem with hibernation and IBM Rescue & Recovery.

Holy CRAP!!! What a find!!! That would have to be *THE* answer if it weren't for the fact the IBM R&R software is not installed. I built this T30 from scratch and I am certain I never installed it. I am my own "Rescue and Recovery," LOL!
Thanks for sharing this. I will forward the note to the CMTs working on my T30 right now.
-kj-
p.s. here's a quote from the page:
"Early versions of the IBM Rescue and Recovery with Rapid Restore program (versions 1.0.0032 and earlier) have an issue with battery-life performance while the system is in the Hibernate state on ThinkPad systems. This patch reconfigures the IBM Rescue and Recovery with Rapid Restore program to correct this issue."
p.p.s. I'm thinking that anyone with this issue who HAS IBM R&R installed should apply this patch immediately.

I have to ask, how did you find this?ibmuser wrote:Doubt this is related to the issue, but I did not know of a problem with hibernation and IBM Rescue & Recovery.

I have been on the phone with four different IBM techs, at least one of which was extremely capable, we searched for an hour and found nothing. It was within a few months of this article being posted, but it was DEFINITELY later. Just curious how you located it.
Thanks, kj

Hi,
I just bought a new IBM Thinkpad T42p. When I checked it in the morning, the power indicator showed 98% charge capacity. So, its not much of a power drain and I'm sure, some power is consumed by the monitoring electronics present in the laptop, for example the toggle input from the power on switch. The power drain on my laptop is not appreciable.
The configuration is P M 745 1.8GHZ, 1GB RAM, 60GB 7200 RPM hard disk, FireGL T2, Bluetooth, Wireless LAN and 1000MBits LAN integrated. I live in Bangalore, India and the part number for the latop is 2373-HTA. Its equivalent to the 2379DYU configuration, but with 1GB RAM and a fast 60GB hard disk, as opposed to the 512MB RAM and 80 GB slower hard disk on the 2379DYU models.
Best regards,
Elvis Dowson

Hi Elvis,
Nice system you have there! Thanks for your input. This is a really long thread, but let me summarize.
My understanding is that when a ThinkPad is in "hibernate" mode (not "suspend" or "stand by") there is NO power consumption at all. It is the same as shutting down. The only loss of battery charge is the "normal" degradation you would see if the battery was out of the computer.
I have verified this personally by testing over a period of days. I have screenshots that document it. When shut down, the power loss in a 24 hour period is negligible, less than .1 - .3 Wh. On my system, when hibernating for the same amount of time, the power loss is 3.4 to 3.8 Wh.
Something is clearly drawing power. Finding out why is the essence of my query. I believe this is *NOT* design behavior and therefore something is amiss. I've already had my system board replaced. No impact.
IBM CMT in North Carolina has now had my laptop for three days (since Tue 12-Oct) and I've not heard anything, hopefully, they have been testing it and I will have some feeback to share soon.
Thanks again!

Well here's the latest.
Techs are still looking into the problem. It has been at the repair facility since Tuesday AM.
I am told there will hopefully be more information available at the beginning of next week. Living without my laptop is proving to be far more difficult than I imagined. Too bad IBM doesn't do "loaner" laptops!
Get this though. I was told my less-than-six-month-old Ultrabay battery was discovered to be dead. A replacement has been ordered. I feared all along that this behavior - constant charging after just a few hibernate/resume cycles - could result in premature battery failure. It might just be happening. If it is, I sincerely hope IBM finds and fixes the problem. I don't want to be buying (or requesting) new batteries every six months.
I will keep everyone posted. Have a good weekend!

Just got off the phone. My T30 is to arrive today. Thanks to my unit, they were able to determine (or at least are saying) that the problem is BIOS related, and it *IS* happening on other systems ... therefore, with the next release of a T30 bios, it should be fixed.
So, now I wait for the new BIOS ... and try to justify getting a T42p when I have a perfectly functional T30!!! Arrrrrrgghhh!!!

kjarrett, I think I have the same problem as you with the new T41 I received last week. In hibernation I think I lost 10% overnight and on standby I think I lost 40% before I upgraded BIOS and drivers (haven't retested yet).
I upgraded my embedded controller and BIOS so hope that will resolve things. I'm going to check the BIOS options to see if there is anything obvious before retesting.

hiengu, and all with this problem ... if you call IBM, be sure and mention my case number, IG3985 - they confirmed other systems were exhibiting the behavior, and perhaps if more people call and report the problem, the next release of the BIOS (which is supposed to fix it) will be sped up somewhat.
Thanks!

I haven't been able to reproduce my battery issues lately. My wireless is even much better too. I might pick up an extra 9 cell battery a little later.
I don't seem to have any drain in hibernation, and I seem to maybe drain between 5 to 10% in 24 hours on standby so I'm happy with that.
I did call IBM since one morning my battery drained 60% on standby. They weren't much help but would be willing to send a new battery. I didn't think it was the battery though.
After that, I did reload defaults in my BIOS and made sure I had the latest of everything. I did a complete factory re-install of my OS (out of curiosity) mostly. I was careful about the drivers I selected this time. For some reason, I have stronger wireless this time around also!!! My wireless G is stable and strong whereas before the only thing I could get stable was wireless B mode.
One problem I had with the factory re-install was that I couldn't access my "Predesktop" area during bootup. I fixed this by installing IBM rescue and recovery with rapid restore, then later uninstalling it. I can now access the "Predesktop" area with the blue Access IBM during bootup.
Hope this may help someone.

Well FWIW my T42p does *NOT* exhibit the same behavior as my T30. The overnight loss is negligible, about .03 - .05 Whr, definitely what I would expect for normal cell degradation in a power off state. Yippee! I'm back to using hibernation! Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
