T30/Linux observations
T30/Linux observations
Well, this one of my few and only posts on this forum and I must say that I am truley impressed by the thinkpad T30 and really the operating system(linux) i chose to install. After doing Google searches for the longest i finally decided on the T30. It only had 256 meg of ram but that was easily rectified with the help of a few friends up to 512. When I recieved it, windows XP was already installed, so i slicked the drive, formatted it for a dual boot with ubuntu linux and did a fresh install. I am here to tell you that ubuntu recognized everything right from the jump. i had no problems with video, sound or the LAN card. it picked up everything. i must say that the suspend to disk/ram both work. I don't have any internet access but I will say that with just a standard install of the breezy version everything is good. There is other software in the other repositories I would like to get but I don't have a connection. With that in mind I was suprised at how the desktop with all of the applications really come together quit smoothly. The only downside is that there is no mp3/DVD support out of thwe box. I think with that the multimedia support the ubuntu flavor would be complete. Be advised thought that this is the breezy release that I am using. Things are working so good that i am really afraid to update breezy when i do get some internet but i will just for xxxxx and grins. the next step is to get a new 100 gig hdd to store my music and movies. everything you read about the P4 as concerning heat is true. it runs warm when tasked alot but drops back down to a lower clock after. I think my next laptop will be the T40 series with the pentium M.

for mp3/DVD support grab automatix, its a script that adds all those things. It wasn't legal for ubuntu to have them out of the box because of liscencing reasons
edit -- breezy? [censored] that is old, another month and edgy should be out I think

well, that would be a good idea if i could get dapper or edgy when it comes out but its kind of hard when you are out on the open seas and bandwith is at a premium. breezy is the only version that i had before i left land so that s what i have to work with. is the automatrix script very large. i normally don't deal with it , but download everything i need via the internet and customize myself. its just that this time i didn't have everything i need before i left
