Should I worry about buying a T40?

#1 Post by TPadguy » Mon Aug 28, 2006 3:01 pm

Hi,

Ib am/was considering buying a T40 as a backup notebook for use in the field..I have heard good stuff about the battery life...I was just about to take the plunge when recently I have seen some posts about defective/touchy motherboards on the T40...

Now, i am very careful with my notebooks but don't want to have to baby one....

Would this still be a good move or is a T41 a safer bet? This machine has SXGA display so it is temping....

Thanks for the input!

I bought my X60s to replace my T43 as a primary notebook, and instead of using the T43 as a backup, I sold that and have a T40 on the way which I scored on ebay for $300. I'll let you know what I think of it when I get it in a few days.

External Storage: 250GB + 500GB Porshce

T40 Project: (Planned) P-M 2GHz, 2GB, 100GB, DVDRW

Wow! For $300 I would definitely take a chance...This one is considerably more but has sxga, 80gb hd, bluetooth, etc etc...Still if the motherboards crap out it is not worth it!

I though I always heard how great the t40s were. All of a sudden I am hearing some problems or perhaps I just missed them before....

Please let me know what you think....

Thanks.....

My t40 just died last week. I have pretty much narrowed it down to the motherboard. Now i'm debating on if i should fix it or just buy a different laptop. I'm on vacation right now but i've got my trusty t23 at home for me to use in the time being.

Well that is a little disconcerting. I was hoping people would say that the failures were few and far between but I am starting to wonder now...

Thanks and good luck with repairing it....

Failures are few and far between if machines aren't abused.

My T41 is very reliable, just like my T30 before it (and my 600X before that, and my 600 before that). :D

I agree. There are some problems that creep up with any machine but if you take car eof it and use it like a normal person would you should be fine. ANytime there is a problem the word spreads like fire but if everything is running good and ok there isn't much ot talk about. There is a saying where I used to work. "It takes 10 years to get a customer, but 10 minutes to loss them" basically saying if something bad happens everyone will know right away. thats just my 2 cents

Oh I forgot to mention that my t40 had fallen off the top of a truck about 6 months back so I guess take that into consideration. And a no go on the palmrest thing.
