R51 - Blank desktop appears on login

#1 Post by latnit1 » Tue Aug 29, 2006 8:49 am

Hi guys...
Iam using Windows XP sp2 and this is a new issue for me. When I login entering the password- blank desktop appears. Each time I had to use ctrl+Alt+Del then logoff and login for the same to appear. Any one knows what the problem is?. Please help.

Thanks!

Hi, welcome to thinkpad lover community...

User EDIT: Try to open task manager and click on the file tab, new task and type in explorer and click ok and see if explorer appears...

User EDIT X2: CAUSE
This issue can occur if there is an older version of the Shdocvw.dll file in the %SystemRoot% folder. Because Explorer.exe is located in the %SystemRoot% folder, the search path for any called files starts in the %SystemRoot% folder before the path is searched. The default search order always looks for a called file in the folder containing the program file before searching the path to locate the file.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue: 1. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, and then click Task Manager.
2. On the File menu, click New Task (Run).
3. Type cmd.exe, and then press ENTER.
4. If necessary, change to the %SystemRoot% folder.
5. Rename the Shdocvw.dll file by typing ren shdocvw.dll shdocvw.old.
6. Restart the computer.

User EDIT X3: this is a windows OS issue...

If you move your cursor to any of the corners of the screen, does the desktop move?

Have you been keeping up with spyware/virus detection?

Are you logging on to a domain? If you are make sure you have the right user name and password and select local computer to log on. If not try booting into safe mode and create another user.

Hey guys... i thank every one for the reply...

Hi NS..

I tried the solution and I got into "%systemroot%”, then tried renaming "shdocvw.dll" but it says it doesn’t exist. I also checked the directory and its not there.. so i logged off using new task. An error message appeared for explorer.exe "end task". I logged back and the desktop appeared.

If I create a new user deleting this 1, will it work fine or is there any other solution for this...

R51 is thicker than T series and I would suggest T series. The only good thing about R51 is the cost. Both weighs the same. Also R series are stronger than T.

Captain Bump-a-lot...I had this happen on my R40 many times. I only "corrected" it by doing a reinstall of Windows, which shouldn't have been required on a month old installation. My solution was to sell it.
