DISK FAIL NO operating sys found-after major drivers update
DISK FAIL NO operating sys found-after major drivers update
I update my laptop last night - after total recovery i did on this drive few weeks ago. I couldn’t update anything till yesterday after downloading the "update" software from lenovo site. The "update" software that i had after the recovery - just didn’t update more then 3 things.
Anyhow , last night it update Lot’s of things (like 250M). everything got installed and worked fine after few reboots (BIOS , Controller etc)
this morning i opened the lead , worked for few minutes suddenly BSOD. i reboot , i saw XP screen start - bang another BSOD.
reboot again , this time i'm getting this message :
0200: Failure fixed disk 7
the only option i had at this time is to press F1 and to go to the BIOS settings.
i tried rebooting few times same thing. i let it seat shut for few minutes no help.
So i was sure at this point i have to take the HD out try to recover my data and maybe send the thing to service.
While i was searching this 0200 message on Google. i tried again to see if i can reboot . and bingo - everything works again.
I did immediately backup to my important files . but beyond me what happened here . anyone experience the same thing ? can this thing happened again ..?
i don't trust it now as before ....
thanks Danny

I have seen a similar thing, though not uncommon, happen on other systems and it isn't generally related to any brand in particular. For one reason or another, usually because of a malfunction with the HDD during boot or a combination of ill-compatible drivers and/or mobo issues, the HDD cannot be "found" by either the BIOS...that usually results in an "Operating System not Found" error though. That is the most common indication that the hard drive on the system is going to make a wrong turn into a rather hard wall. Although that Windows error is far less common from my experience as opposed to the BIOS "Not finding" a HDD or an operating system.
Do you know if it updated any disk controllers/drivers? That could be the cause of it.

well it happened again today, same thing same message.
after few hours i managed to login again . on boot i chose last known working boot . then i rolled back the HD driver .
since then it didn’t do that again , i'm not sure if it's stable . but i do see the "expolorer.exe" go to 100% every few minutes and basically hangs the machine.
it's obvious that one of the drivers that i installed yesterday is doing this.
is there any way to find which one it is ?
i did install by mistake the "think pad SATA power Management Driver"
at least i know i download it, i have no idea if that was installed in the process or not. and i dont know how to find out where it is.
i have a snap shot picture of all the drivers that where installed yesterday from the "installation history". i just don’t know how to load a picture here in this forum.
any ideas ?
thanks Danny

yeah it is possible that the disk is out.
but i have the feeling it's not that.
the whole thing happened right away after updating BIOS , controller and all the drivers at once. so i suspect it''s related to that.
from what i understand the message i'm getting :
ERROR 0200: Failure FIxed DIsk 7
comes from windows. so doesn't that means the HD still works ?
how do i get to the rescue and recovery menu ?
thanks Danny

If you are getting that error at startup right after the logo screen from the Bios, thats a Bios error and has nothing to do with Windows. The fact that it doesn't even see the fixed disk guarantees that drivers and the OS have nothing to do with the problem. I'd cast a vote for your drive being on the way out, as doing all of those updates probably put it through more work than it's usually used to doing, which likely made a pre-existing problem with the drive come up to the surface.
If you think that it's Bios related and not hardware, you could always back date the bios back to the previous version, but beleive me a problem like that (if really caused by the bios) would be caught in a heartbeat by the engineering team.

i meant maybe the bios didnt install correctly why i was updating.
and something went wrong.
i still have access to the windows some times ....hd doesnt do/did any bad noises
never droped it , it didnt work for many hours . first time for me to have a disk fail in this way.
i mean if it was defective i assume i would see something much earlier. and if not , then why now ?

Drives don't always die quickly .. over time the surface of the platter can become damaged enough to experience intermittant failures, not unlike those you are seeing.

well New hard drive arrived today (thats what they determine on the phone is wrong with my laptop) and guess what , same problem.
now i'm pretty sure that my first theory was correct.
something went wrong with the update procedure . must be the BIOS.
is there any way i can go back in the bios version without loading windows ?
i have to add here , that this new drive is blank - no hidden partition.
and i didnt try to install yet everytihg on it from the recovery CDs.
but from talking to the tech, i should get"no OS found" and not what i'm getting : ERROR 0200 : Failure fixed Disk 7"
thanks Danny

yes there was a Thinkpad SATA Power Managment Driver
but i would think this driver will have problem under Windows.
i dont even see the HD now ....
pressing F11 cousing some Broadcom Base Code and UNDI msgs.
then gettomg Operating System not found

MB was replaced by Lenovo, works fine now with the same original HD.
just here and there i still have the explorer.exe going to 100% CPU.
that problem happend in the same driver update.
i'm not sure if thats a conflict driver or a corruption

Re: update
Hi all.
My friend has the IBM Thinkpad T43 and she got the some error.
I tried several ways to help her, but no luck. It starts with the black screen, followed by 2 beeps and error Fixed disk. If I press F11 I get Operating system not found.
I know that the HDD is OK, cause it works in another PC.
I tried installing a new OS to another empty HDD and it crashed after the first reboot.
I'd be very happy of some help.
Thanx!
Tom

Re: DISK FAIL NO operating sys found-after major drivers update
Remove keyboard, palmrest and wifi-card.
Then reattach the keyboard.
Now put pressure on the big Intel chip under the (removed) wifi-card and try to start.
If the laptop now boots, you have the well-known Southbridge problem.
You need to get that chip reballed (by e.g. www.reflowrepairs.co.uk) or get a new motherboard.
Also, what's the point answering to a 6-7 years old posting?

Southbridge or HDD, neither one's good, the HDD is easier to replace though.
