Pseudo dead pixels

#1 Post by DeusExMachaera » Wed Aug 18, 2004 7:39 pm

My T42's screen occassionally has pixels that turn white. However, logging off my windows account and logging back in fixes them. Since dead pixels are a physical defect, this is seems like something else. Whats up?

This sounds like a memory problem. Do you restart your computer or just log out of the account?

I have the same thing that happens to my T42. A reboot usually takes care of it, but i dont know what causes it.

Try putting your mouse cursor over the dead pixel. If you see the scrolling icon that comes up when you use the blue mouse button and the trackpoint on you TP, it's probably an UltraNav bug. If this is indeed your problem, try updating your drivers. If you don't see the icon, then it could be a memory problem.

P.S. If you do see the scrolling icon over the dead pixel, you might be able to instantly (but only temporarily) fix the "dead" pixel by clicking the blue mouse button once or twice while over the stuck pixel.

As Atmos said, the random white pixel is an ultranav bug. Just click the middle mouse button (assuming you have it enabled) and it'll go away.

Apart from the ultranav glitch, I do observe rare occurences of random stuck subpixels (i.e. colors) in certain applications such as browsers, etc..., and they do not always involve DirectX or video rendering situations either. In these cases, minimizing the window will cause these stuck pixels to disappear temporarily. I rarely get these anyway, but they often go away without restarting but never in a truly consistent fashion. I just can't figure out if this is really as a whole a memory issue, a hardware issue, or even if it is due to video rendering artifacts though. It may be a combination of these, but balanced towards memory I'd say, since it rarely occurs exclusively in video or games and disappears with use. But this still seems very odd, I need to do a bit more investigation next time it happens.

When I slipstream-installed Windows XP SP2 on my Thinkpad, I decided against installing the IBM Ultranav drivers. Instead I installed the generic Ultranav from the Ultranav webpage. No more pseudo dead pixels!
