Missing >10% of my HD capacity after hard drive replaceme

#1 Post by bonez318ti » Wed Aug 30, 2006 9:52 am

My hard drive failed in july. I didn't have a set of recovery CDs and loaded a new copy of XP and thinkvantage software from the ibm website.

I believe that it was after i installed the recovery software that i lost a significant chunk of my hard drive.

I partitioned my hard drive into 2 drives (one for programs and 1 for data). I left 15 gigs for the programs drive and im down to about 200 megs and I'm constantly getting messages that my hard disk space is too low.

When I go to properties, it shows that I'm using something like 14.2 out of 14.6 gigs. When I go to look at whats in the C drive, i show all hidden folders and files and only 5.2 gigs are shown to be used. I didnt have the recovery CDs so I dont think the R&R could have installed a hidden partition (when I press Access IBM button on startup, it doesnt bring me to the rescue software).

Is there anyway I can see if there is a hidden partition? Any other ideas on how I can free up this space?

by the way, this is a brand new hard drive..

thanks

I doubt it is a hidden partition, Windows does not see that one, so it would not count it towards the used space total. It is more likely, I believe, that you are not really seeing all hidden folders on your C partition. There are three options to set for this in the Explorer's folder options (unfortunately I'm using a German XP, so I cannot really tell you all that well which ones). I suspect the culprit is R&R, it likes to create big automatic backups, stored in the well hidden RRUbackups directory.
