i called IBM and they asked if there was an FRU number on it.

there wasn't.

so that was the problem.

Pat,

There is a way to make it work. It basically involves turning off the hardware scan that the X40 does to make sure the MAC address of the wifi card matches the ones in its database. To do this, you need a little program that sets the appropriate bits somewhere in the bios. I don't have a link to the website that explains how to do this, but I remember it was pretty simple...try doing a google search on the error message. I believe that is how I found it.

If you are still able to return the Intel card, I would just return it and buy the IBM/Intel 2200. It's only about $20 more at buy.com, and you don't have to "hack" your X40.

Pat,

I'm not sure. That is actually what took the LONGEST time for me...trying to figure out how to boot into DOS. I had to make a bootable CDROM to do it, but even that wasn't easy.

The program itself takes 1 second...

Actually, there is a way to make it work. You have to flash your BIOS with this "hack" that makes it not check if it's a IBM Intel wireless card. Just go to the following link to read more...

Does anyone know if this no-1802.com file will work with an x31? from what I read here: http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/ ... /1048.html
it looks like someone had trouble making it work although they were trying to do what the no-1802 thing did from inside linux

I've had reports of it working fine with the X31. The original attempt at the Linux code was writing the wrong CMOS bit - the version on my website now works fine.
