Extention of warranty for Certified Used Notebook

#1 Post by madana » Sat Sep 02, 2006 11:19 pm

Greetings,

Does anybody know if it is possible to buy warranty extention for Certified Used Notebooks? Generally they come with 3-6 months, which is a kind of short.
Regards,
Madana

Hi Madana,

I believe that the current policy is that you can not extend the 3-6month warranty on Certified Used. I have had reps tell me this over the phone.

Thanks,

You are able to at least purchase a ServicePac after the unit is out of warranty. Cost varies though. I've heard 169/year. CostCentral also sells ServicePacs and they're a lot cheaper. I'm not sure how they're applied to the unit though.

IBM will let you extend the 3 or 6 month warranty on a certified unit if you are a business or an individual with a tax ID number only (if you don't meet those requirements and are a "regular person" multiple IBM reps have told me they can not extend the warranty). However, the after warranty packs mentioned above are a good idea.

I considered extending a warranty on a unit through my brothers business but the price per year was astronomical - if I remember right (and it's different by unit) it was ~$350 a year.

Thanks to all for your replies. Now Certified Used Notebook does not seem to me a good idea. :(

I just got a reply from a Technical Services Specialist, IBM Global Services, regarding extending 6 month limited warranty with ServicePac. He answered in the affirmative:
Yes you can extend the warranty for 2 years, and it will also cover you internationally. Please contact me at your earliest convenience so we can get that warranty started for you.
Hmm... Now I am confused. :? I have asked him about the price and will get back to you with the quotation, if you are interested.
Regards,
Madana

1 year - $169
2 years - $321

Does anyone know if one can purchase the post warranty service pac from CostCentral and apply that? 141 for 2 years is better than $321. Would I call up IBM/Lenovo and just have them apply that to the serial number?
