Using Partition Magic on X60

#1 Post by yiplong » Sun Sep 03, 2006 10:43 pm

X60 comes with its hard drive in only 1 partition. I usually like to keep my data files on a separate partition and regularly wipe the C drive clean and restore it to an earlier image.
I would like to use partition magic to split the hard drive into C and D, but this can be a potentially risky thing to do, as a failure would result in total loss of all data. Has anyone done it before? Is it safe to run Partition Magic 8 on x60?

I use a Linux live CD to edit partitions. Make sure you get one with qtparted or gparted on it. GRML is good, and I believe the latest live cd release of Ubuntu has gparted. There is a risk if you dont know what youre doing, but just double and triple check everything before you commit to changes. You may also be interested in investing in an external hard drive. I have 3 myself, 1x 250GB, 1x 500GB, and 1x 100GB Portable (which I carry around with me). I use my 250 mostly for backups; I make montly images of my whole drive (2 images, one for windows and one for linux), and weekly backups of my user daya folder (My Docs in Windows and /home in Linux). You can get a 250GB external for around $100 now. I think I paid something like $130 when I got mine, and $220 for the 500GB (which I got well after the 250).

External Storage: 250GB + 500GB Porshce

T40 Project: (Planned) P-M 2GHz, 2GB, 100GB, DVDRW

PM 8 fixed me up good...

100 GB (spec anyway) -> 65 and 25 GB partitions.

No problems.

No problem my me as well, using Partition or PM. The ONLY problem I ever did on my old T40 was to merge the 'hidden' partition where the recovery stuff are. Don't touch that. Just split C into the number of partitions you need and leave the 'hidden' one from Lenovo alone.

I normally use 3 partitions C: which I change often, D for data storage and E about 1GB for internet explorer cache, downloads and all the frequently moving stuff so that my deframentaiton is low on C and D

I also split primary HDD (100Gb SATA) successfully into three partitions using PM8 and backed it up using PQDI2002.

However both these programs refused to recognize my secondary bay 80GB SATA HDD drive somehow, complaining something incoherent about its geometry.

Does anybody have a similar experience?
