T41 Hard Drive Installation Problems

#1 Post by Indiana Jones » Thu Aug 19, 2004 1:55 pm

I recently attempted to install a Toshiba 60GB HD in my T41. I have all the recovery CD's. I installed the new drive and followed the recovery procedure. However, when starting the recovery process, I got an error stating the correct drive could not be found. I am confused. I believe I installed the HD correctly. I am typing on my T41 right now with the old hard drive in it, so I did that right. Any help you can give me would be wonderful.

Did you set the first boot device as CDROM (not HD)?

SKTN,

Yes, the program seemed to be running. It appeared that the hard drive could not be accessed.

Even though the drive is made by Toshiba, you might try downloading the IBM/Hitachi Disk Fitness Test (DFT) and making a DFT floppy. Boot off the floppy and see if DFT can see the hard drive as the primary HD on the IDE controller.

If it can't then, it's probably a hard drive controller board problem.

Put the original drive back in. If you can boot and run as normal then there's nothing wrong with the computer. Others have done this switch so the drive should be compatible.
