Strange 1802 effect.

#1 Post by k2jsv » Mon Sep 04, 2006 12:01 pm

I did the 1802 BIOS mod for the internal B/G wireless module I installed. Works great!! Then this morning I did a hard drive swap and something strange happened.

Put the new hard drive in (ghosted from the old drive) and boot the computer. It first tells me the clock needs to be reset, odd.. but not outside the realm of possibilities I thought. Then the 1802 error for unauthorized PCI card.

Anyone else encounter this? Seems a little strange. The computer operates the way it should without any other errors or issues. I thought the BIOS isn't dependant on the hard drive at all.

Any thoughts?

Are you sure that you didn't disconnect the CMOS battery along the way?

It could be that your CMOS battery is going bad and that disconnecting the Thinkpad from any power source will cause it to deplete quickly.

That thought crept into my highly disorganized brain. The CMOS battery wasn't touched at all in the process. But it dying could be a possibility. I'll test that when I get home though.

Any idea what a new one for an A31p would cost? Just in case...

I've seen them on ebay for less than $10 shipped.

When you have to reset the clock, the BIOS has lost it's settings, and NO-1802 must be run all over again. I would use it the way it is and if it asks for the time/date again grab that CMOS battery.

I tested the voltage on the CMOS battery and it's at the lower end of the limit (according to the service manual). New CMOS battery and life is good.
