X31 with video artifact

#1 Post by hone » Tue Sep 05, 2006 6:10 pm

I have 1.5 year old refurb'd x31. I keep getting video artifact though and sometimes I can't get it to go back to normal after the screen goes blank/black. I checked the ram/hd and they seem to work, I have this issue while going through the IBM diagnostic via the access ibm button. The screen became unreadable with many different colors after shutting the lid and opening it back up. Unfortunately my warranty has expired and I'm wondering what options I have. Thanks.

it seems to be sensitive to motion, so tapping the side of the lcd can bring it back from a blank screen sometimes. I think it's either the lcd or the ribbon cable, probably the cable. Is it easy to replace one of htese?

It might just be connected loosely. Try refitting it before going out and buying a new one. It might also not be the LCD cable at all, although chances are it is.

As to whether it is easy to replace or reseat the cable, it requires some disassembling. Nothing you can't do with some patience and the Hardware Maintenance Manual though.

when I press down on the metal thing where the ribbon attaches to the motherboard, it seems to work perfectly fine. I couldn't find a way to remove it to reattach it. The lcd connections on the top seem fine though and I reconnected those.
