Can IDE settings be changed? (Thinkpad R31)

#1 Post by ECC » Thu Aug 19, 2004 9:44 pm

Hello all; can't seem to find anything addressing this and I'm fearing the worst -- any help?

The problem: Started hearing scary noises from the hard drive in my Thinkpad R31 so I got a new Toshiba 40gig HD to replace the old drive. Problem is, the new drive is incorrectly identified -- it identifies the drive and displays the correct model (MK4026GAX) in BIOS/boot, but if I use Partition Magic or Ghost it incorrectly thinks the drive has these stats:

Cylinders: 5168
Heads: 240

Instead of the correct settings:

Cylinders: 16383
Heads: 16

Doesn't seem like the R31 allows for manual setting of the IDE parameters in BIOS. Is there something I'm missing, or did I buy a drive that won't work with my Thinkpad? Thanks all,

- TradeMark G.

Oop, solved my own problem -- not by finding manual IDE settings, but by realizing that there were partition problems in the source drive I was trying to Ghost to the new drive. Doh! So, repartitioning and everything from scratch solved the problem. Thanks all,
