Can't Restore Factory Image (Build)

#1 Post by whmwhm » Thu Sep 07, 2006 9:37 am

I would like to rebuild the factory image on my Z60m. In the predesktop, when I try to do this with R&R (3.0), the process goes through all the screens up to the final warning about completing the act when I receive an error message from recov32 that states "The directory name is invalid". After closing the message box another one pops up and states "Product recovery failed during the convertion phase". (I'm guessing "convertion" should be spelled conversion or converting.)

This process worked once in the past, but since then I upgraded to R&R 3.1 and then back to R&R 3.0. I don't believe I have done anything with forethought to hose the rebuild code in the service partition, but am at a loss to recover from this error.

Any suggestions on how to rebuild the image?

Thank you.

Option 1
If you have a Rescue Media CD of the same version of Rescue and Recovery as your backups, then boot from it, and try to restore your backup. If you have not made a Rescue Media CD yet, and you have the same version of Rescue and Recovery installed as your backup was made with, then you could burn one and boot from it. Now try restoring your backup.

Option 2
If you can still boot into Windows, and if you have a copy of the identical version Rescue and Recovery program that your backups were made with, then I would try the following.

Uninstall Rescue and Recovery, reboot, then install the identical version of Rescue and Recovery that your backups were made with, then reboot again. Now try restoring your backup.

Option 3
If the above doesn't work for some reason, you could use the Product Recovery Disc set to reinstall the factory image, then upgrade Rescue and Recovery to the version that your backup was made with (if you have it), then restore your backup.

GomJabbar,

Fortunately I had a set of recovery discs so I tried Option 3. After suffering a panic attack when it told me my 2nd disk was invalid (I had incorrectly answered yes to a question on whether my 2nd disc was an extension of the 1st) the process of rebuilding the factory image went smoothly. Since the recovery discs were created after I had upgraded to Rescue & Recovery 3.1xxxx, that's the version I have in the pre-desktop rather than 3.0xxxx even though the latter was the version on my initial build when I purchased the machine. I've looked, but it doesn't appear that any version of R&R was installed to the WinXP desktop since it doesn't appear in the Thinkvantage Program Shortcut Folder or in the Add/Remove Programs. I'll probably install R&R 3.1 and hopefully it will not destroy my pre-desktop's ability to do a full recovery without the discs.

And now for a rant - I believe all of my problems were the result of ignorantly upgrading to R&R 3.1xxx. I have since discovered this forum and have learned that I am not alone in hitting this land mine. It’s difficult to understand that performing what appears to be an incremental upgrade (3.0xxx to 3.10xxx) renders all of your previous backups invisible, but Lenovo does supply a warning in fine print. Worse, I believe that I hosed my pre-desktop’s ability to perform a Recovery to the factory build by the same upgrade. As an aside, if it weren't for this forum, I would still not know the difference between a "recovery" and a "restore".

Thank you for responding to my question and getting me out of the mess I created.
