SP2 Upgrade
Hi,
How many people have upgraded to SP2?
If you have upgraded to SP2 with problem what was the problem? Software? driver? etc.
Thanks

Microsoft published a conflict list (about 50 programs). You can go to Microsoft or search through the forums here for SP2.
Generally, though, SP2 works very well and with a great many programs. The Security Centre has to work with firewalls and Antivirus and that is one of the issues with SP2.
It harmonizes very well with Symantec Client Security V2 Corporate, that is, SP2 Security knows about the third party security installation. SP2 does not harmonize well with Norton AntiVirus 2003 or BlackICE firewall, but you can turn off the security warnings and it at least works.
Overall, I have it on two machines and I am happy with it.

no problems here!
OK, I can't help but vent here a little, while we're on the topic of SP2...
I'm tired of reading all these articles and threads (not here, other places) about how SP2 is full of loopholes and incompatibilities.....it may not be perfection but its a major improvement.
And if you actually look through some of these articles to read about the actual "incompatibility" that they claim (most people don't get past the big screaming title with some inflated #)...lots of them are small inconveniences as opposed to problems.
For instance, I was reading on another forum (name withheld) about the problems with SP2 Security Center and Norton/Symantec antivirus. The general attitude was "OMFG SECURITY CENTER SAYS I HAVE NO VIRUS SOFTWARE KILL GATES DIE M$" etc. etc. You would think people with enough sense to post on a board would know enough to see past that and realize that its just a temporary (they released a patch no?) mistake, NOT a gaping security hole.
/gripe. Sorry, and again none of this is directed at anything/anyone on this forum, all is from other places.

I agree with what Benz had to say. Have had zero problems on 2 thinkpads and 5 assorted desktops using different brand virus and firewall systems. That's not to say some people don't have problems, it's just that those with problems should be calmly looking for solutions on forums such as this one.

Problems or not, what's the big rush?
If you already have a firewall, AV software, anti-malware software, etc. and practice "safe surfing" there's little or nothing that SP2 adds in the way of security. Why not wait a month (or two or three) for SP2 to settle down, for the problems, if any to be uncovered, for the ISVs to issue upgrades to their software, etc?

Successful SP2 install here...
I am running a DLink DWL-G650 PCMCIA "g" adapter and a DLink DI-624 wireless router. Had upgraded all my other XP desktops to SP2 but was holding off on the Thinkpad. Here's what I did, after copying the SP2 install executable to the desktop.
1.) Full Norton Ghost backup
2.) Configured Zone Alarm NOT to load at startup; shut down ZAPro
3.) Configured XP so Windows would manage my wireless settings
4.) Removed the DLink WiFi utility from the Startup group and exited it
5.) Disabled WEP encryption, MAC address filtering on my router using my desktop PC
6.) Installed SP2, followed prompts
7.) XP immediately connected me to my wireless router
8.) Configured Security Center options
9.) Re-enabled WEP & MAC address filtering
0.) Re-checked Security Center options (firewall detected)
Overall, painless ... and great performance too.
I *constantly* had the DLink utility complaining it "could not reconnect all network drives" - I have a folder on my desktop I share with all my home PCs. I knew this would go away with SP2's wireless connection management. It did!
I miss the little green bars in the system tray though. Will have to see if the wifi icon there now changes when my signal strength does.
I ran a wifi file transfer benchmark before and after the SP2 install. I was concerned I'd still get SuperG speeds - 108mbps. It appears I am, or close. I copied the SP2 patch (266mb) before and after.
Time to copy using the DLink WiFi: 1m10s
Time to copy using the XP WiFi: 1m26s
Slightly longer, but, definitely NOT 54mbps, which is what I had feared.
Now to test the wireless reception strength ... around my home.
So far so good!
