The Thinkpad of Cell Phones
The Thinkpad of Cell Phones
I just got a Sony Ericson M600i and I love it. It ranks among cell phones similar to the way Thinkpads do with laptops. There is no camera, sort of like no Windows key on TPs. Its (almost) all black.
Is anyone else out there as finicky with thier cell phone as they are thier TP?

I've always been real picky with cell phones. I'm 23 and I've had a cell phone since I was 16-ish. Since then, I've gone through about 30 different models, as I quickly find particulars I hate about each one. My favorite is still the Nokia 8890, even though it lacks any real functionality, and a color screen..I really enjoy using both the Motorola MPx200 and 220, the 220 obviously being much newer and feature packed.
I've never owned a Sony Ericsson, just an Ericsson back in the days of 1 line resolution screens. In seeing other peoples SE's, they often complained about lack of quality, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt that things have improved.
Nothing on the market right now really strikes me as entirely unique and useful.

I would go with my Motorola RAZR, then a Sony-Ericsson. LG, however, is a really good bet if you want something heavy on features and light where it counts. Samsung is also up and coming in the area of high-end headsets. I haven't had much experience with AudioVox and Nokia has been, since a few years back, been shoving as many features as they can think of into their high-end headsets.

I'm still a fan of LG... just got a CU500, and it's awesome. Good battery life, great reception, bluetooth that actually works, and with a 1GB microSD card I can convert dozens of video's to 3gp and view them on there.

i'm still using the razr as well. it's no longer about it being that cool phone on the market, it's about being practical, functional and thin. i added one of the $10 outer shells for it on ebay so now it looks like a phone robo cop would use.

I have a Samsung X105 circa 2003. Though the software on it is somewhat sluggish, the phone is very reliable, has excellent battery life and is the most durable phone I've handled since the old brick phones of the 1990s. This phone has been accidnetly dropped onto concrete and asphault many times, hit against steel, woord, etc, and in general has just taken a beating from all the stuff it encountered at my old job and all it has to show are some scuffs and scratches. I also must mention that reception is great on this phone as well. The phone is also very lightweight and easy to carry in a pocket all day.

my old (2 year old) samsung phone that just died survived all kinds of beatings:dsigma6 wrote:i agree with the durability of samsung phones. i've had the q105, n105 and s105. very solid.
1. that battery was subjected to very high humidity (as i talked on the phone when taking shower - i know how weird that sounds).
2. i dropped the phone on concrete many many times
3. i left the phone in the car and subjected it to well over 100 degrees
4. i stepped on it a couple of times at night
now the battery life was amazing, after 1 year of such abuse it had better battery life than other cells phone that i had, i still didn't have to charge the phone more often than every 2-3 days. Then after almost 2 years i had to charge it every 1.5 days. the screen recently died - probably because the phone was constantly wet and dropped but the batter and the phone still worked.
another good thing about my samsung was that it had basic functions and not a lot of crap that i don't need. and my new phone is a samsung too.

Yeah, the RAZR isn't about being that "new" anymore. It is, however, a near-perfect operational ultra thin cellphone . Essentially a reincarnation of the popular Motorola STARTAC, except without the large battery mount on the top lid that would make opening the STARTAC with one hand a tricky proposition without it doing a backflip. The battery life and reception are the strong points of it, especially when I can go for 5 days in the labs or clinic without having to stop and recharge the thing.
I have also seen literal battle tanks of LG and Samsung phones that had loads of features. The old Ericsson I had, before they combined with Sony, was much the same, yet larger.

In the quest for the perfect phone, I have gone through a ridiculous amount of mobiles in the same time frame as I have enjoyed "not" having to look for the perfect laptop after locking onto the ThinkPad line. I have tried nearly every brand available and it was quite a learning experience.
From the very moment I first saw the RAZR I was impressed with it's form factor. No stub antenna to get in the way. Nice and flat (like a ThinkPad) which fits nicely in a lot of places. Terrific for using one handed and it's lack of slippery, rounded plastic body makes is a joy to use. I have been using once since they were first released and I'm very happy with it overall. Great illumination of the keypad and large display. Very good reception and call clarity. The metal body adds a quality look and feel to the phone.
Improvements: I would like to have just one entry per person with the ability to list all their phone numbers in that entry. Now one has to make individual entries so the person's name appears in the phone list as many as three times (wk-hm-cell). However, this is not unique to the RAZR, just something that Motorola has not dealt with on the software side. This is where I appreciate the user interface of the Nokia. Another improvement would be the quality and clarity of the speakerphone feature. Other than that, it's doing the job nicely for now.

even with a new battery, my razr still only goes 1.5 days before it dies. of course the dot under the battery is red, as my girlfriend thought it was a good idea to have a cell phone at the waterpark. i have a charger at home and work so it's never a problem.
some of the new versions of the razr look nice, i just haven't gotten my hands on one yet. i'll let the prices come down first. it seems like no matter what brand or feature a new phone has, it will be $250 on ebay for a while.
i have never had one of my phones die on me from natural causes. it's usually after losing a game of darts at the bar, or some other drunken phone tossing experiment.

You're welcome. I was confronted with the same problem when I got my first Razr and quickly sought a solution. Having more than one or two entries for the 300+ folks in my address books drove me nuts!archer6 wrote:Wow!.....Outstanding......

My Motorola (Nextel) i860 is built like a brick. The camera res is beyone awful, about .3 of 1 megapixil. Its a very solid phone with loud speakerphone, and you can make calls with the flip closed etc.
ThinkPad user and ThinkPads.com member since summer, 2006. That was a good summer.

If you look on Howardforums.com you could find some information about that issue and a lawsuit that I think it was related to.semaj wrote:I am a big fan of the siemens phones for the gsm network. Currently I'm using a motorola v710 phone that isn't bad when it isnt rebooting.
Otherwise... I use a Motorola e815 on the Verizon CDMA network. I have the extended life battery in it and have on average about 1200 minutes of talktime per month, plus text messages, plus picture and video messaging. I charge it every 3 days whether it needs it or not. I keep a sandisk 1 GB Transflash or MicroSD card in it for "storage". Works well for when I am doing some photography and take a quick shot with the phone to share with people.
This phone replaced my ever faithful V60 that died after almost 4 years when I dropped it out the window of my ambulance and it got crushed by the duellies on the way past. I have had the e815 for almost 2 years, and have dropped it down several flights of stairs, left it in the car in the 100 degree weather we had earlier this year.. it got soaked in the flooding back in June. Dried it out.. no worries.
