Transfer iPOD to new hard drive??

#1 Post by vanaya » Fri Sep 08, 2006 3:24 pm

I have replaced my hdd 40gb to 80gb on R40 2896-GZU. How can i get my music from my ipod on my new drive?? I don't care about song counts. Just want it organized by artist and album. My hdd failed so i can't transfer either.

thanks in advance.

I get a warning stating "Are you sure you want to enable automatic updating? All existing songs and playlists on the ipod will be replaced with songs and playlists from your itunes library."

This would be the zero I have in the new hdd.

I have search ipod lounge and don't completely understand there process of doing it.

I believe Apple doesn't allow you to copy music from the iPod to the computer using iTunes due to copyright issues of the songs. Therefore you wouldn't be able to transfer your old songs from your iPod to your computer without an iTunes alternative, such as a program like yamipod. If you just wanted to connect your iPod to your new computer (or old computer with new hard drive), I would think that all you had to do was plug it in and go (with no syncing or automatic update of the libraries).

Ah! I hadn't understood that to be the case, I thought it would be like my old Nomad where I could use it to transfer songs from my desktop to my laptop.

Copy the following directories from the old drive to the new one with appropriate locations:

C:\Documents and Settings\[Username]\My Documents\My Music\

C:\Documents and Settings\[Username]\Application Data\Apple Computer

C:\Documents and Settings\Robert Accettura\Application Data\Apple Computer

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer

Should work just fine, I've done this before. I believe that's all there is to it.

Unfortunately, the OP stated that their old HD was dead.

Then he may be toast with that... as I recall those directories contained the necessary data for iTunes to assume it's all the same pre-used data.

Go back to ilounge and the top of the Ask iLounge page has a link to "How do I copy songs from my ipod back to my computer?" You have to use a 3rd party software package.

And start backing them songs up!

Try backing up the laptop, not just the songs.

You won't regret it... it saves you from a lot of problems like this. Backups over the years have saved me many hours of work.

Depending on the iPod model, you can treat it like a USB HDD and rip the songs off of the hidden folders on it.

You might also want to look into using something other than iTunes for pulling the songs off next time. Winamp and many other MP3 players have the ability to sync with iPods without using iTunes at all. You can make and copy over playlists and songs from, say, Winamp just as you would with iTunes....except you don't get the limits such as not being able to use it on more than one computer. :)

Best soultion:

PodUtil will solve this problem. Have been using it for years. Apple blocks transfer from iPod to HD. Check Download.com.
