What's your favorite setting change / irritant to remove?

#1 Post by neil.albert » Fri Sep 08, 2006 11:34 pm

First off, I love my X60. It is light-years ahead of my former machine (D@ll - trying to limit my profanity usage). I've been reading through the forum and I love many of the changes from the default system feature set (e.g. disabling the beeps that accompany closing the lid), and product recommendations (e.g. Waterfield sleeves - I love my horizontal with flap).

I pose this question to all... If you could only bring three books to a deserted island... oh, wait, wait... I mean, if you could make only three "must do" recommendations for new x60 owners what would you choose (hardware, software, setting, accessory)?

Mine (just to get the ball rolling):
1. A Waterfield sleeve (mine was waiting for the arrival of my X60)
2. A nice durable usb drive like the 2GB sandisk cruzer titanium
3. A good dvd ripper for watching movies/tv shows (you own) when flying so you don't need the dock - haven't settled in on the best program yet.

Two favorites:

removing "wireless radios are now on(off)"
making my homepage stay at google.com and not get changed to lenovo.com every time I boot.

also: making it so screen res doesn't change on lid close/open

good call on linux, though I am only brave enough to dual-boot. What are you running? Mandriva, RedHat, Suse....

You know, this is the first laptop I've ever gotten where the first thing I did was NOT go find my DOS boot floppy, fire up fdisk and nuke the shovelware out of my new machine.

"You can save $100 if you purchase your laptop with Windows Me preinstalled!"

"Dude go for it; it's maybe got fifteen minutes after it arrives before that travesty of an OS and all its shovelware buddies are never seen or heard from again."
