Stay away from Rescue & Recovery 3.1
Hi - just a few words from a first time poster to let you know about my miserable experiences with the latest version of Rescue & Recovery.
I installed v. 3.10.0022 and the critical patch for Windows Update (KB917422) and I lost all network connectivity. In the property tag for the network device there was now a "TVT Packet Filtering" listed.
Once I unchecked that item, things kinda sorta worked again, allthough the machine never shutdown properly, prompting me to kill "ACardBackground" along the way. (I considered installing Client Security Solution - although not listed as a prereq they seem to be tied) I've uninstalled R&R now and things seem okay -- except I no longer have the ability to do backups.
I wouldn't install R&R again on a dare. Be warned.

I had a very similar problem after trying to install the latest R&R, although the installation actually failed (it was done with the thinkvantage system update) and did a "roll back". Anyway, afterwards it came out that I could send and receive data on a network for only a few seconds at a time before I would have to reset the connection.
Luckily I had an ERDNT registry backup to save the day (never leave home without it). I want the latest version of R&R so I will try manually downloading the latest version so we'll see if it works.
Hey maybe the reason nobody is reporting any faults is because none of them can connect and post about their bad experience

I think I may be having the same problem also. Whenever I try to connect with Access connections now I get a DHCP error. I just installed the latest version of R&R this morning. I will try rolling back the version or uninstalling it.
I am now accessing this site through the Opera browser before bootup.

So I've tried to install this latest version again, and it turns out that the last time I tried to install it and it failed, it removed the R&R version 2 program from my computer completely and the recovery partition of my hard drive no longer functions. Furthermore it won't install this latest version because it still thinks that a previous version of R&R is still installed. Trying to remove the remnants it asks for a folder containing "IBM Rescue and Recovery With Rapid Restore.msi" because the location "C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\_is21A\" is not valid.
I've tried the installation a few times with no success and on two out of the five tries I lost network connectivity. I even tried removing all references to Rescue and Restore from the Registry but the installation still fails.
So all I can do is put the registry back to what it was before the installation (to get network connectivity and put the registry files I deleted back in there). I'm stuck with a non-functioning recovery partition and absolutely no R&R. As well as all this for some reason my windows system restore has no restore points (I have no idea why - it's turned on) so unfortunately I can't get the old R&R software back. Finally I have a R&R boot disk and some DVD backups from which I've tried to get the old version and they won't work either (I boot into R&R and select restore files, select the cd/dvd option, it asks me for a disk, I put it in, it recognises the disk then crashes).
So I've tried everything I can think of to fix this (all I wanted was to make a new backup with the newest version of the software). For the moment all I can do is back up my documents and hope my computer stays alive (although absolutely every other application is fully functional).

I've also tried installing the version which is stored in my IBM tools folder and my thinkpad seems to think that the R&R software is still on my HD. The only remnants of it is the Windows patch which was installed with the latest version. I guess I should have uninstalled that before R&R.
Now when I try to install the R&R which came with my thinkpad it tells me that a newer version is still installed. I don't feel comfortable playing with the registry myself.
I can't make a backup through R&R as the thinkpad can't locate it. I don't have any problems creating restore points though through XP.

Yep, when I try to install the default version (C:\IBMTOOLS\APPS\IBMRNR\IBMRNR.EXE) the installer gives me the same error as when I try to install the new one, i.e. it's looking for some installer file from "C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\_is21A\".
Seems like we're in similar boats.

I feel for you.
I like to keep all of my software up-to-date to the latest versions (as long as it doesn't cost me anything). However there are two pieces of software I avoid. I leave Rescue and Recovery at the original version as it came from the factory. And I won't touch CSS with a 10-foot pole. But hey! That's just me.
I did do an update of Rescue and Recovery once, and it went alright. But after reading up on it a bit, I decided not to update it anymore. I have since restored Factory Contents using the Product Recovery Disc set, so I am back to the version of Rescue and Recovery that came with my ThinkPad.
I do not use Rescue and Recovery for a backup. I use StompSoft Backup MyPC for that. I only need Rescue and Recovery for the possibility that I may need to restore Factory Contents at some point in time while I am out on the road and my backups are not with me. YMMV

Appreciate it,
It's unfortunate really, it's left me in a bit of a quandry, I mean I could easily change recovery softwares and go for something like acronis, but really I'm starting to get the feeling that my installation is in a bit of an unstable state after the last 24 hours, so I'd be relying on an unstable backup. And of course there's the price tag - I paid a bomb for this computer and that included the price of the recovery software I should say, now I'll have to dish out €50 or so for acronis. I'm not the happiest of campers at the moment. Some of the IBM updates have messed me up in the past, but I've always managed to fix things but this one is a real pain. On a side note I think it's really bad that upgrading to version 3 of R&R meant that the old backups needed an old version of the software on disk to work (at least that's what I gather). My last option, a long overdue reinstall is not really an option at the moment, I don't have the time really, but we'll see.

Experienced the same problem. Upgraded to R&R 3.1 and lost all network connectivity on my T42. Uninstalled R&R 3.1 which restored network connectivity but recovery partition has been updated and previous version of R&R has been removed.
Then started to receive CSS errors "Client Security Solution Logon
There was a problem connecting to a critical service. It is possible that the anti-virus or firewall software is blocking the connection" which is detailed in another post
Decided it wasn't worth the hassle and restored back to factory settings.
Be warned. Upgrade to 3.1 with caution!

When I swicthed to IBM laptops (A31) some 4 years ago I quickly abandoned IBM's backup / recovery utilities and went to Power Quest Disk Imager (now bought up by Norton).
When I got my Z61m two weeks ago I quickly ditched the Lenovo backup / recovery software.
Then discovered that my aging PQDI did not agree with the SATA drive and I went to Acronis.
I have been experimenting with Acronis for quite some time but I do not agree with their "TrueImage" naming. When one does a restore and opens up the defragmenter then you can see that the files have NOT been put back in the same place: the whole disk is nicely defragmented and stacked from the beginning of the partition. This gives me the jitters: what else is it doing that might one day bite me in the back?
So far eeverything is OK - with PQDI I had no qulams about doing umpteemp restores but with Acronis I try to put as much updates into a backup so that the number of restores from orginal installation stay to a minimum. Perhaps I am just paranoid and someone can re-assure me that there is not a problem but am not taking chances at this time.

I guess this is the first time I have ever heard someone complaining about the images being defragged and stacked nicely after going through a run. From all the systems that I did that on, yet yet one has to have a problem caused by that.

appreciate the reply and relating your experience.
IMHO a "true image" should be a byte for byte exact replica lets it becomes something else.
In my line of work one can take no chances with reliability. But like mentioned PQDI ain't working no longer on SATA and Acronis seems to be one of the better alternatives.
Peace, Peter
A while ago, after applying Windows Update, Windows Update broke all of my network connections. I've tried everything I could. Since then, I've been doing all my work in Linux. Whether that's a good thing or not remains to be seen.
Today, I tried to restore the system using the famed R&R. I booted into XP and attempted to restore from a USB HDD. Everything goes as expected and R&R rebooted into XP.
However, that's THAT. The computer simply goes into the normal XP startup sequence. NO RESTORATION ever took place.
Thinking that I would do better if I boot into the R&R Workspace in the hidden partition, I did so. However, the R&R Workspace refused to detect my USB HDD.
So, now I'm stuck. I've a working backup in my USB HDD, but none of the R&R methods can allow me to restore.
Can anyone offer any clue?
I'm working in a multiboot environment. Will GRUB interfere even though I've full access to both XP and the hidden partition?
What's the expected behaviour after selected a restore from USB HDD function from Windows XP and a reboot?
I've went through Lenovo's website but it does not seem to offer any clues. Google was more helpful in the sense that many people seems to have issues with restoring from USB.
I wonder why a fix hasn't come from Lenovo yet. I'm sure we are not the only ones with the problem.

Rescue and Recovery v2.00.0170 WANTED
Help!
I want my stable Rescue and Recovery v2.00.0170 back! I tried newer versions, but they are not as stable for me as mentioned version. The newer versions either made my system slow or caused other problems But I noticed that I don’t have a backup of my old v2
the only thing remained is the setup filename "setup_ibmrr1170.exe", It’s not available for download from IBM/Lenovo site anymore but CSS v5.43 which works with Rescue and Recovery v2 is still available.
Can someone please please please upload IBM Rescue and Recovery v2.00.0170 or even latest v2 (v2.xx.xxxx) somewhere on the Internet and post a link here. Say on http://www.rapidshare.com/
Or I can even give you my private ftp server address
Thanks in advance,

I also discovered this new 'TVT Packet Filter Miniport' in device manager, it never bothered me or caused problems so I forgot about it.IBM_T40_User wrote:Hi - just a few words from a first time poster to let you know about my miserable experiences with the latest version of Rescue & Recovery.
