v100 socket or soldered?

Does anyone know if the v100 has its CPU socketed or soldered? What about the n100?

I was wondering if they could be upgraded to core 2...

probably not and probably not..

but if lenovo is following the IBM model with their lenovo branded laptops then you should be able to get a hardware maintenance manual and learn if the cpu IS or is NOT socketed..
my guess as to that is NO, not socketed..

Interesting. I checked the maintenance manuals for both the n100 and v100, and they both show diagrams of the CPU being socketed...

if they ARE socketed, good for lenovo and lucky for you..
but i would think that a dual core cpu is not likely to run with an older chipset..
just seems to be too much difference..

Well, the new core 2 duo CPUs are supposedly pin-compatible with the older core duos, and people have been able to successfully swap CPUs in the older Apple mac mini's (and iMac's, I assume), and so it is an interesting question. Unfortunately, I don't have the answer for Lenovo laptops, but I'd be very interested in the answer, too.

I think, 95% sure though, that the Napa Merom is pin-compatible with the Yonah, but the Santa Rosa Merom won't be. So it is possible, although the amount of work it takes depends on the model and type of laptop you perform it on.

Well, I took a look, and my N100 has a socketed CPU. It also appears to have the Intel i945PM chipset (according to PC Wizard, at least), and so there's the possibility of a CPU replacement. So, the remaining questions are:

• Will the existing heatsink (heat pipe, actually) work? The die size of the core 2 duo appears to be significantly larger than that of the older core duo.
• Will the core 2 duo work with the existing BIOS? I somehow doubt Lenovo will come out with a new BIOS to allow the core 2 duo to work (but it would be so cool if they did).
