XP Clean and resource friendly installation?

#1 Post by fuligin » Mon Sep 11, 2006 12:31 pm

Hey everyone,
I am considering deleting my hidden partician and installing a new version of XP pro on my R51e. The main objective of this for space as I only have 40 GB,and also to utilize the least amount of resources as posible.
What are the necessary Thinkvantage utilities and drivers that absolutly need for my system.
Here are some of the Thinkvantage that I have on my currently have on my system by default:

Access Connections ( I do plan to use WiFi)
Away Manager
Message Center
Presentation Director
Software Installer
Thinkpad Configuration
Acess Help
Client Security Solution
Easy Eject Utility
Keyboard Customizer Utility ( I assume i need this)
Power Manager ( I assume i need this)
Productivity Center
Rescue and recovery
System Update ( I asume I need this)

Additioanlly I notice that by default I have ATI Hydrovision, is there any use for this program apart from the virutal desktops that i can get when running litestep.

Are there any other programs that i need to look out for.

Thank you all in advance for your suggestions.

You can run XP without any of those utilities. This has been discussed a lot before, it really is personal to what your need is.
You only need software installer/system update if you plan to update the ibm software. I have gone both ways on this and ultimately decided the IBM install is the best way, but that is only from my experience.

Access Connections ( I do plan to use WiFi) I don't use it, windows works fine for me. Others like AC.
Away Manager I Don't use it
Message Center Definately don't use it
Presentation Director Keep it just in case
Software Installer Good to have to update the software (being replaced by the system updater).
Thinkpad Configuration Good to have for all the information on your system
Acess Help Definately don't need it
Client Security Solution I don't use it
Easy Eject Utility Don't use it
Keyboard Customizer Utility ( I assume i need this)
Power Manager ( I assume i need this)
Productivity Center Don't need it
Rescue and recovery Without the Hidden partition not sure what it will be good for.
System Update ( I asume I need this)

All this [censored]/b] is absolutely useless

You need your drivers and if your a twit software installer to well install them

Access Connections ( I do plan to use WiFi) - junk, useless, makes things worse, for idiots
Away Manager - must be some new bloat from IBM
Message Center - OMG they still make this?
Presentation Director - Never used it dont know dont care
Software Installer - ok
Thinkpad Configuration - just a face
Acess Help - www.
Client Security Solution - stay the hell away
Easy Eject Utility - a good way to waste your ram
Keyboard Customizer Utility ( I assume i need this) - hell no
Power Manager ( I assume i need this) - just the driver forget the other crap
Productivity Center - productivity my [censored]
Rescue and recovery - better freeware alternatives
System Update ( I asume I need this) - just bookmark the update feed on the lenovo website for your device and check it once a week and forget this crap

Trust me it makes a huge difference! You dont need any of that crap most of it is already built into windows

It appears to me that you don't have a clue what you are talking about. If you don't wish to use things, that's up to you - I have no comment about that. But telling the rest of us who *do* know what we are doing that we are all ignorant. Well ... let me just suggest you speak only for yourself. ... JD Hurst

It's a good practice not to get plastered and try to keep posting. A few beers is OK, but if you are seeing dual monitors, call it a night

T41mbi, you should stop giving people advice when it's so obvious you don't have a clue what you are talking about. A lot of the software you mention is useful to lot of people and got features that is not built into windows as you claim. Maybe you don't find them useful, but a lot of people do and some might even be required like AC when using authentication types that is not built into windows. No offence, but something tells me that you are not an advanced PC user and might not really know what features that is available by installing the software list above.
