Thinkpad Assistance please for Z60m 2531MTU

#1 Post by HowardL » Mon Sep 11, 2006 7:54 pm

Just bought first Thinkpad Z60m 2531MTU. Have previously used Sony notebooks.

1)I would appreciate some assistance. Have stopped most of the unnecessary programs from running in startup through "msconfig" but find that the Z60m is extremely slow to shutdown and re-boot. I have put on system/driver updates. Are there any suggestions to speedup?

2)I am also using ZoneAlarm Internet Security. For some reason, even after uninstalling and reinstalling and uninstalling Symantec, I cannot get ZoneAlarm to shut down properly. Each time on shutdown, Windows has an "end program" screen. I have spoken with ZA tech support and they have not beena able to assist.

3)Also after coming out of suspend or hibernation, I am often not able to connect to my network. Any ideas?

All in all, I really like the notebook and very glad to find this site. Thanks for any assistance that anyone can offer.

If you don't need the CSS (Client Security System), then disabling that speeds up shut down and start up drastically.

That might help with your standby/hibernate issue as well - I have the same machine, but I haven't tried standby or hibernate.

Mine comes out of standby fine, and reconnects to my wireless network. I have all the latest drivers, but I don't have CSS installed.

Humpa

I uninstalled Client Security Solutions and it brought my shut down - boot up to 3 mins which took about 1 min 20 secs off the previous. Definitely helped.

The network connection has worked all day today after suspend so I'll just keep an eye on it.

Still have the ZA "end program" screen on shut down so may have to replace it.

If you have any other suggestions, please post and thanks.

Before I screwed up and had to do a clean install, my boot up time was about 60 seconds exactly - and that included scanning my fingerprint and connecting to the wireless network. I didn't do anything special to try and get the boot time down - I just disabled the normal things, like the CSS. I had the the other stuff turned off too though - system restore and the ibm partition were removed/disabled (not sure what affect that would have on boot up though).

Some people are crazy about getting their boot times down (like 30seconds?) - there are some good threads about it (somewhere). BTW, after the clean install, it was down to about 45 seconds without doing anything special.

How can you do a clean install? I thought you could only reinstall the IBM preload. There are no disks. Would appreciate info on how you did it? Thanks

You are given an option to make the recovery disk set, either six/seven CDs or one CD and one DVD, that have the ability to restore your Thinkpad to factory configuration *including the preload and hidden partition*. Note that you can only burn one set of these per each preload; in other words, you can only burn one set and then, if you use them to restore your Thinkpad, you can burn another set.

She does the things you do.

There is a Sticky near the top of the Windows OS forum for making a Windows install disk without any IBM/Lenovo add-ons; if you really want to go this route.
