Printing From a T42p

#1 Post by First Light » Fri Aug 20, 2004 1:17 pm

Former TP600 user & just tried to install the RS232 cable from my printer in the back of my new T42p. Oops. :? Do I need to use the USB2 port? If so, can I get a 232 to USB2 converter?

Yeah, they exist. For example, here's one: http://www.cablestogo.com/product.asp?c ... &sku=26886

I believe the docking station also provides a serial port. If you want to go that route.

but wow, RS232. Perhaps it would be better to invest in a new printer :D

Well, dumb me. The printer cable is a IEEE 1284 Parallel Cable and the port on the back of the T42p is not a parallel port. So is a Parallel to USB2 cable available? Thanks.

The printer port on the back of the T4x is, indeed, a parallel port. What kind of printer do you have? Most printers today come with both a parallel and USB interface so you could use either. I prefer the parallel port as it frees up USB ports.

I have a Brother lazer printer and the parallel port on the back of the printer has 36 pins. My T42p has a female 25 pin port that does not match the 36 pin parallel cable that goes to the back of the printer. I've printed off of my older TP600 at a variety of locations using a parallel cable, but the same cable would not fit the T42p? Not really asking what port someone prefers to use, just asking how to connect my printer to my T42p. Thanks.

Parallel cables are 25 pin din at the computer end and 36 pin centronics at the printer end. A standard parallel cable should work fine.

The 600E and the T42p have the same DB25 parallel port plug on the back of the computer.

The dual 36 pin Centronics printer cable was supplanted by the DB-25 to 36 pin cable YEARS ago and there is no way you ever connected that 36 pin cable to your 600!

Sounds to me like you're attempting to plug an extension cable into your laptop or are attempting to use a half-pitch Centronics 36 pin bi-directional cable.
