Trouble with USB-ports on a R50e

#1 Post by Joe76 » Tue Sep 12, 2006 3:33 am

Hi guys,

I'm from germany, so please excuse if my english sounds doesn't sound that good. But I have a serious questions which could not be answered in the german thinkpad-community.

I have trouble with the two USB-2.0-ports at my R50e (1.5 years old).

I've been running an extern USB-DVD-Writer and a USB-hard drive since then, they both are 2.0 compatible and i had no problems with them at all.
But some weeks ago, windows messages appeared whenever I plugged in those devices. They were saying that "this device can perform better if you plug it in on a 2.0 port. Please click here to see a list of the accessible ports"

I just removed the USB cable once or twice and then it worked normally again as it did before. Unfortunately the message appeared more often in the meantime and now both usb-ports are only running with 1.1 speed anymore.

In the hardware manager of windows I've uninstalled all usb-entries and with the next reboot they've been installed new. But the problem was not solved with that.
These are the entries in my usb-controllers list:
intel(r) 82801db/dbm usb 2.0 erweiterter Hostcontroller - 24CD
intel(r) 82801db/dbm universeller Hostcontroller - 24c2
intel(r) 82801db/dbm universeller Hostcontroller - 24c4
intel(r) 82801db/dbm universeller Hostcontroller - 24c7
USB-Root-Hub
USB-Root-Hub
USB-Root-Hub
USB-Root-Hub

I do hope very much that one of you guys can help me with that, because it really sucks now. I need more than two hours to burn a DVD (8xSpeed) or more than one hour to transfer one GB from HD to HD.
Maybe one of you has made the same experience or has some expertise? Is it a known hardware problem of the r50e?

Thanks a lot in advance,
Jörg

Hi Jorg,

You won't find the answer to your problem in the BIOS. That problem was fairly common, but was supposed to be solved by Service Pack 2. I'm sure your R50e has SP2 installed, correct?

I would suspect corrupted driver(s). You might try replacing the drivers by downloading new ones from Intel. They're part of the chipset driver set for the Intel 852. Try this URL:

http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts ... bmit=Go%21

Even if they don't work, the worst case is you would roll back to your old drivers.
