LCD does not turn off when closed-sensor is pressed
Hm, this is rather odd. I was just playing around and used a pen tip to push down on the "LCD-Closed" trigger below the panel. I was suprised that the LCD display doesn't actually turns off, it just dims it. Is this normal? I had my setting to "Do nothing" when LCD is closed rather than the default "Go on Standby" option.

That's what happens when you lose power to the LCD backlight, which is what I always thought the little black button and microswitch did when you closed the lid, i.e. you can see the desktop faintly thanks to the ambient light in the room.apoll0 wrote:It dims the screen to a minimum that you'd think it's off. But after looking at it closely, you can still see your entire desktop. Can anyone else confirm on this?

When you close the display and have the computer set to "do nothing", it turns off the backlight and the desktop is still visible under ambient light.
Ignore that idiotic statement in the line above! I don't know what I was thinking when I replied, but the fact is that both the backlight and display should turn off when the switch is depressed.
It's NOT working correctly!

James

strange, but on my tp it DOES turn off the screen, not only the backlight.
it was one of the first things i checked when i got my thinkpad, and i'm absolutely sure that it's turning off the screen, because when i release the switch it turns on the display a few moments before the backlight starts, and in this time i can see the screen.
anyway, it's no big deal if the lcd is on or not, that's maybe a few seconds of battery life, not much more.

I just checked mine and it also turns off the entire screen, not just the backlight. I also have my TP set to "do nothing" when the lid is closed. I am sure it is just the backlight as I, too, can briefly see the desktop w/o backlight when I release the button.
