Wanted new quiet HD for x60s
Wanted new quiet HD for x60s
Hi everyone, I've been lucky enough to compared a x60 against the x60s (see post in hot wrist rest thread). I'm sticking with the x60s because of its quieter fan, HOWEVER
The x60 has a Hitachi 40GB Travelstar 0A26922 HTS541040GSA00
which is near silent, the x60s has a 60gb Fujitsu MHV2080BH, this drive makes the chassis vibrate and has a low 'whoosh' idle noise.
Can anyone recommend a quiet 60-80gb drive with no vibration?
Thanks

For ultimate quiet check out the Samsung Spinpoint 5400 RPM drives. I had one in a PowerBook that was the quietest drive I'd ever used.

I've found both the 100gb versions of the Hitachi travelstar (lenovo p/n 39T2603) and the Toshiba drive (lenovo p/n 39T2719) to be very quiet. We have hundreds, no thousands, of these in our machines at IBM hq where i work.
I dont trust the hitachi tho, i've had 2 hard drive crashes both hitachis in the last year or so.
I wouldn't go any smaller than 100gb... because my 100gb drive has only 79.7gb of available space after the OS and ibm preload. Also, the 100gb doesn't command the massive price premium anymore like it did last yr.

I have the TravelStar 100 GB 7K100 (7200 rpm) -- very quiet, and no vibration (unlike the earlier TravelStar 60 GB, which was pretty quiet but had a significant vibration).SkiBunny wrote:I've found both the 100gb versions of the Hitachi travelstar (lenovo p/n 39T2603) and the Toshiba drive (lenovo p/n 39T2719) to be very quiet. Reliability ... I have been very happy with the IBM/Hitachi drives (Ultrastar, DeskStar and TravelStar) in general, but I have no statistical data to back that up.

The hitachi drives in the T40's T41's were notorious for failing, tho i dont have the data, i read many anecdotes and experienced it first-hand myself.tomh009 wrote: Reliability ... My x60 has a hitachi, so i hope that they no longer crash. The drive gets hotter in the x60 than it did in the t41
I've noticed that my x60 hard drive ranges from 28-38 degrees.

What dirve type is it? 5K100? Mine is a 7K100 ... mine typically runs around 40C in my x31 (the 7K100 is rated for 5C to 55C ambient temperature).SkiBunny wrote:My x60 has a hitachi, so i hope that they no longer crash. I have an X60s with a FUJITSU MHV2100BH 100gb drive. I can't hear any kind of noise, vibration, whatsoever. I feel pretty lucky as I have not had any serious problems with this laptop other than minor hardware issues. Once, I had to have the keyboard replaced because something sticky got under the back space key. Luckily I purchased ThinkPad protection.
When I first received the laptop the media bay battery would not fit and they shipped a new battery and an Ultrabay.

Silent PC Review's tests show that the Seagate Momentus 5400.3 is the quietest SATA drive.
