Hard to explain

#1 Post by Dato2020 » Sat Sep 16, 2006 6:32 pm

My t40 is acting very strange. First the cursor sticks...then un sticks...if I put it over a topic or file it automatically opens it without my clicking. Eventually no matter where I move the pointer it opens things, etc. It is just acting crazy.

I then reboot. Sometimes it works fine for a while and other times it goes crazy again.

I reinstalled XP by reformatting my HD and it was fine for a while and now is beginning to do the same thing. I have installed all the updates from Leveno.Regards,

There are a variety of causes:

1. Make sure the TrackPad is not operating simultaneously. That can cause the extra effects you are noticing. Use one device and disable the other.

2. With respect to the cursor "sticking" - I usually see that (not often on my T41) when another application is grabbing the disk at length or very frequently. The cursor sticks until the drive is free.

So how to deal with 2? I had a problem with Norton Internet Security (Retail) 2003 Firewall grabbing the disk every second because of Instant Messenger. That caused the cursor to stick, and indeed, the whole machine to drag. The initial solution was to disable Instant Messenger (I don't use it). The long term solution was to dump Norton Retail products and use Corporate Client Security.

Try using a can of compressed air and spray underneath the mouse buttons. I have seen debri get stuck underneath the keys and cause continual clicking or possibly the inability to click.

This gives me a hunch that this is caused by spyware/malware.
Have you tried any anti-spyware, like: AdAware Personal Edition, it's freeware. I personally use this and it does cleanup stuff well.

Thanks everyone. I fixed the problem by sutting off the track pad.
