Buying a ThinkPad - Can PC-BSD run on T60 or T60p?

#1 Post by 3nigma » Sun Sep 17, 2006 12:24 am

I'm getting ready to buy my FIRST ThinkPad to join the community!

I think I've narrowed my choice between the ThinkPad T60 and the ThinkPad T60p. The only difference is in the video card. Which one would be the best, that I could run PC-BSD (and hopefully Mac OS X86) in best? Ideally, I want the best video card if it can be supported (256MB).

Intel Graphics Pro 950
ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 PCIexpress (128 MB)
ATI FireGL V5200 (258MB)

I want to run PC-BSD as my main OS, Mac OS X86 for fun and possiibly main OS if I can get it to run well, and finally have a final partition of XP for business (CAD, games, etc.).

Any ideas what would be the best?

My friend is great w/ BSD and uses OpenBSD. He read a post that leads him to believe that any one of these T60 models with the ATI video card wont' work. Here's the link:

Can you offer more insight into this? I won't need to run anything 3D in PC-BSD (that I can anticipate). I am just browsing the web, word processing, and playing music and storing photos (main OS). Should I have any problems doing any of this with these ATI video cards.

Also any insight into these models w/ Mac OS X86 would be greatly appreciated as well!

Thanks again for all of your help, I'm really excited to join the community! I want to run PC-BSD as my main OS, full-time.

Thanks a bunch!
